In my opinion what makes a plane really survivable is low wing loading, and the Knife Loop Yak (which I linked to earlier) is about as low as you can go, and far lower than any full-fuse plane from 3DHS, ExtremeFlight, or even Precision Aerobatics. Here's a video of the Yak being flown in an auditorium:

I would do something from 3DHS before for less money before I bought an unknown from nitroplanes.
http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/40-EPP-Edge_p_16186.html Judging by your 16000 posts and 12 years+ years in the hobby, I see nothing wrong with starting with Balsa. EPP planes sag in the car and need to be re-trimmed every time you fly them. I would think you know all about balsa planes and their repairs. Lots of companies make a plane with large control surfaces and call it a 3D plane. What you will get from 3DHobby Shop or Extreme Flight is a plane that was designed excel in 3D post stall flight. So buy something from one of these two companies and you will have the best introduction possible. You already know how to fly planes in your sleep. What you need to experience is flying along at half throttle, then giving full up elevator briefly and watching the plane stop all forward momentum and it's in a hover. Or flying along slowly and killing the throttle and applying full up elevator and watching the plane gently parachute down instead of tip stalling and death spinning into the ground. Lots of people get into flying because they see some cool 3d flying and want to try that ASAP before they have general flight skills. EPP is wonderful as it's forgiving when you loose orientation and drill a plane into the ground full throttle. But it's frustrating to try to learn 3d with bad airframes. Edges are the best at post stall flight as they naturally resist tip stalling. If you want the comfort of EPP, go for the 40" EPP Edge from 3d hobby shop or the 48" Extra from 3DHobby Shop. If you are comfortable with Balsa, go for a 3DHobby Shop 41" Edge or 48"Edge or an Extreme Flight 48" Edge. My 2cents |
