I read the subject title and honestly, I have the same problem.
Both have "something" special, but I guess if I ever manage to buy or build one it would be a Catalina ... to me it looks to have more than just "something" special. (but that's just my opinion)

That would depend on the individual model. Without knowing which kit, how you intend to power it, etc., it's impossible to say.

Since the only Albatross around is the HVP one, I assume both of the kits you are talking about are the HVP ones? There is some good stuff here about their water capabilities that you ought to read.

You might want to consider a Grumman Mallard as well. Browse arount the Waterplanes forum or use the search function for more info on all three airplanes.

I just paid $40 to have a similar kit, a Polikarpov I-16, maybe a little smaller box than one of the HVP models, shipped from the Czech Republic to New York City. I would ask HVP directly, but that's a good ballpark figure to the USA.
I have seen both of these kits up close, and owned some other HVP kits, they are really beautiful, but I would check out some of the threads here about actually operating them off the water, I heard there are modifications required. I HEARD, I did not actually experience myself, I have no experience flying either of these planes. Did fly in a full scale Albatross, though...huge, noisy, and fun!

easytiger - was that the Stein Model Polikarpov? If so, that's a fantastic price.

Yup, I'm really looking forward to getting it. I missed out on the closing sale from their US distributor, Waverly RC, their phone was disconnected and they are gone. They were closing them out for $65, heck of a deal.
I did not pay $40 for the kit and the shipping, the shipping ALONE was $40 and the kit another $85! I asked what a second kit would have added to the shipping, they said another $10 or so, so something like a somewhat larger HVP kit would probably cost about that much.
WISH I got the kit for $40!

HVP only make kits to order (normally in bulk). The boxes for these kits are 1" off the 1.5m (or 25mm off the 5ft ) postal limit - we have difficulty getting the outside packaging within the limit and so stopped supplying overseas - HVP might manage it.

Good luck!
