Question
Brushless motor for GWS Cub

I'm thinking of ordering a Lensrc 17 turn motor for my new GWS cub but I thought I'd see if anyone else has suggestions for a good brushless motor to replace the stock ips the cub comes with. I have had good luck with lensrc motors but perhaps there is another alternative that is less expensive. Thanks and Happy New Year to all!

The easiest replacement is to use the "IPS replacement" brushless motor. Faigao and Medusa both offer brushless motor that is the same size and weight as the stock IPS motor but with the power of a 300 motor at much less Amp draw.

LensRC motors are fine, just need more work to modify motor mount.

Right now I am running a 15t LensRC motor in my Cub. I can use batteries up to 2cell 1300 mah batteries. The flights are awesome, so are flight times. for the motor mount, I kept the stick and used some zip ties, and just did it like that. The glides even with are bigger battery are pretty nice. Make sure you do not clip the wing in a tree 20 feet up, because that will alomst trash your plane. Just some hints, and let me know what you do.

I would go with CDROM Brushless!

10 ounces of thrust, 22 gram motor

Would be perfect for this J-3 cub.

The lens 17t is perfect for the cub. I also have one in my tigermoth.

I've seen others mention the CDROM motor. Can you use one as-is as removed, or do you have to modify/rewind it? Flew my CUB today for first time, stock motor & 2s lipo. ROG ok, but sorta drops out of the turns. Needs more power I think...

When someone refers to a CD-ROM motor, they are usually referring to one that's based on CD-ROM motor components but with modifications. These include the motors from LensRC and the kits from GoBrushless.

These motors utilize the stator, can, and in some cases the bearing holder from a CD-ROM. The stator is rewound with new wire, and the original magnet is removed from the can and replaced with stronger ones.

A workable but rather weak motor can be made with fewer modifications, but it would not be suitable for anything but an extremely light plane. This is discussed in the One hour CD_ROM motor construction thread.

Gws J-3

I too have a GWS Cub that will be underconstruction soon.

I will definitely have some kind of BL motor in there. I like the smaller prop and the higher RPM's that they can produce. I have several to pick from, GB kits to an Astro 010! Hummmmmmm!!!

I went ahead and ordered a 17t lens rc motor. I'll just zip tie it to the motor mount stick. Decided to stick with something I know and this motor powers my pico tiger moth very well with a 2s lipo.

Zippp

cincy,

I have the same motor on my TM.

Sometime try a 3 cell pack! It is so much fun!

But, don't forget where the throttle is!!

I'm running a LENSrc 17T motor in my Horsefly DR1 and love it.
Great motor. No special motor mount needed. Just ziptie it to the stick
mount.

roger roger are you using a 3 cell lipo on the
Lensrc 17 Turn 22.7mm Spindle Mount Motor? (which I have).

I have been meaning to go to one of the
GBX 20 Turn Single Motor but hey if you can use
a three cell Lipo with careful throttle management....

3 Cells

maarset,

Love the AVITAR! Do you have one? I have a 61 Bug Eye.

Yes, 3 cells will get the TM off almost straight up. When you street fly like I do, it is nice to be able to get above the power poles ot street lights fast. If you are set up for a landing and a car shows up, you have the power to almost disappear from them.

Once I'm up over the trees and things I cut it back and just cruise around and look for lift from houses. Culdesac's can provide lift too.
