What do you mean with"acrylic hinge"
Can you explain what materials you used?
Thanks!

Hi Vincent,it's just a variation on this-http://www.rc-soar.com/tech/silicone.htm
The only thing different is that I'm trying an acrylic based sealant rather than silicon. Two reasons- acrylic is easier to apply, and in my experience of it as a bath/ basin sealant, just as good. Also silicon is ato remove from any surface. The only doubt I have is the longevity of the acrylic as a hinge,I'm still debating which to use,the Kevlar or this.

Thanks for the nice link, still learning here

I m used to make my live hinges with a 20mm strip of oracover on both sides of the hinge. This silicone thing has some potential!
Ever seen your hinge get broken ?

I'm still learning this type of construction myself
I found a build on Scale sailplanes which used silicon hinges on a +5m wing,so they'll certainly be strong enough.

Trial of a Kevlar hinge. The hinge itself(outline of the braid in green) works fine, but as I expected before I started,I had to bevel the balsa sheet to allow movement. This defeats the object of preserving a smooth under surface,so I think either acrylic or over/ under tape hinges(another trial, never tried these either)will be the way to go..
I also need to offset the balsa to give enough width to cut the top bevel.

The problem I found with silicone hinges is that once they do tear, repairing them was impossible. The wood surfaces were impregnated with the silicone and nothing, including fresh silicone, would stick.

My best hinge probably lasted about 2 months.

Things have settled down a bit,got myself some more wheels,so time to dust off and get some building done.I'll post some progress pics shortly, also one or two ideas I've come across elsewhere.

Nice day,not much breeze to blow the dust around,so to ease back in I put some colour on the fuselage. This should be bright enough. The area of fin above the wing will be black film eventually.

Digging a trench.:-)
I needed to cut away the top skin and foam to insert a 10mm section to make the hinge line. This really needs to be square to the lower surface; after some head scratching as to how I could achieve a square and accurate cut,the piece of glazing pine caught my eye.Practically the correct angle!A bit nerve racking cutting into the wing, but I could feel the epoxy on the lower skin,so it went ok.A nice sharp wood chisel makes short work of cleaning the groove out.
I need a nice fit here, too tight will risk distorting the wing....so far so good.

Nice clean groove, just need a light sand in one place.30min epoxy and a balancing act to get some weight on.The wing sat nice in the bed so should be ok.

I used the glazing bar again to cut through the hinge line, then set up with alu.strips above and below to cut the bevel. From what I've read this(about10mm)amount of deflection should be enough. Now to repeat the procedure..........
