Video: TBS Discovery Punching through a 8000 foot ceiling....

So I set what is as far as I know the altitude record for a multirotor at 8300 feet AGL on the EZOSD.

Breaking through the cloud layer at 8000 was simply amazing!

TBS Discovery Punching through a 8000 foot ceiling. Very High Altitude FPV Record (3 min 1 sec)

That was really nice. I do allot of high altitude flying with my f450 and I really enjoy it but I do mine without fpv. I just up getting the rest of my stuff for my 900mhz fpv system and my uhf range extender and plan to go higher then I ever have. So far the highest I have ever achieved is 2600 ft. Which I thought was amazing. Is nice to see their is someone else interested in flying high to. I how I ban get to 8000ft plus to soon will post video of my last high altitude flight tonight when I get home I use a gopro but no fpv with it yet

The FAA recommends that you stay under 400 feet.

http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Gu...2569E70077C9CC

However this is a recommendation, not a law. The only time the FAA has ever stepped in with RC aircraft is if you are flying commercially or putting life and property in immediate danger.

I was at least ten miles from even a small airport, over open fields, and was in the ceiling for a very short period of time.

It was about a ten minute flight. I give myself about 500 MAh to get back down. Ill flip it over and free fall for a short time, then flip to attitude mode to slow the fall. Since Im using 10 inch blades, I dont want to over stress them coming back down.

Getting up is easy, coming back down without breaking a blade, getting blown away with cross winds is the interesting part.

Ive had some other projects take my attention, but Id like to make another record attempt in the next few months. I think I can squeeze at least another two thousand feet out of it.

If you want to go higher instead of buying a booster on the UHF, I would go with a UHF yagi pointed up. That made a HUGE difference with my set up.

I agree it is not illegal to fly above 400ft, it is not write anywhere in the FAA or Transport Canada regulation. But flying trough clouds is clearly illegal. The FAA or TC will eventually take someone as example and fine him $10 000, it is too easy with the videos available on the web. That would be much harder to fight in justice.

But if you get an authorization from the FAA and the air traffic is inform, it is totally legal.

IS flying through clouds illegal?

if 400ft is just a recommendation, where is the legal boundary?

I thought TBS was flying over people, not just flying high... Infact I think it was how LOW he flew that was the major point of the complaint. And most importantly, he was compensated for it.

There's nothing "clear" about it. The only reg that might apply is the one
that they're trying to go after Trappy for, which is about "careless and reckless" operation
of an aircraft, and flying through a cloud does not automatically imply that.
I know of places to fly through clouds that no full scale aircraft on IFR ops go (or even can go).

For whatever it's worth, I don't see that there's anything to be gained by
one FPV pilot going after another FPV pilot for random potential violations
of FAA regs. It's not the same as seeing a vid of someone buzzing down
the middle of a busy highway, or parking their FPV aircraft somewhere
off the end of an active runway, where the threat is immediate and obvious.

There is no legal boundary. Thats why its an advisory. There are no laws that apply to FPV other than it cant be for compensation.

FAA also make point trappy fly out of line of site
Which they make clear is against hobby use rules

They make point he get paid for flight

And make big point he endanger people

He make three big problems for himself

Flying through clouds is only ok if you maintain Los
And not get paid for it
