BladeXL on skis

Here in the south of the UK, we don't often get enough snow to try flying from skis, so when the forcast said the snow was going to stay for the weekend I made some from scraps of polycarbonate and wood for my BladeXL.

I'm a bit new to posting video, but I notice the first one had been reduced to 320x200 and re-saved it as 640x400 and was suprised to notice that the file size was halved!

Here's the bettery quality but smaller file... (only 7.3MB)

Nice job Robin! Works really nicely!

The second posting doesn't seem to have any attachments, but the earlier ones were fine.

Whoops, I was caught out by how long it took to upload, and submitted the post before the upload finished. I had hoped it would appear later.

here it is...

They were 12" long and 2" wide, the curve on the front was made around a 6" paint tin, bent to about 45 degrees. They were probably only 1.5" high, but would burst through thick lumps of snow so the ride was smoother than the normal 4" wheels.

I used 2mm polycarbonate, with a second layer 6" long in the middle to spread the load. The attachments were just blocks of wood that were drilled to be a tight fit on the standard axles. The weight of the plane would rotate the skis between 'tail up' and 'tail down' but they didn't move in flight.

Thicker polycarbonate might have been better, I just used what I had. Then again, a single layer of 2mm might have been strong enough but I didn't want to risk a broken ski and waste the only chance I've had to fly in snow in the last 5 years.

As you can see, I sprayed them with orange paint because otherwise they'd be clear and I wanted some warning if they weren't lined up correctly for landing - the paint also disguised the wooden blocks!

In total I probably spent less than half an hour making the skis, which was good because my garage was COLD!

Excellent job and the vids work fine for me. We usually have plenty of snow here this time of year and this year is no exception. I need to get busy.

Thanks, Tom

Thanks for the info. Great idea for a cheap pair of snow gear.

Sounds like some of the guys need to get busy and get some skis on the their birds and do some winter flying.

Oh, I forgot to mention I bent the polycarbonate by warming it with a hot air gun, and then holding it to the paint tin with my fingers. That bit was really quick and easy. Sawing 12" long strips was the hardest bit.

Where can you get one of these in the US? Soaring is out of them and I haven't found anyone else.

Thanks
