Question
GWS Cub wing repair

Can I use a 1/8" dowel or some hard balsa as a spar to repair a wing?

mine broke cordwise between the fuse and the wing strut.

I'm sure a dowel would work. I've also heard of people simply using bamboo sticks and clear packing tape.
I snapped my wing about 6 inches from the left tip and fixed it as follows:
I secured the main portion of my wing to my building board. I used 5 minute epoxy and spread a VERY small amount to coat the edge of the broken piece. I fit it into position, then used clear Scotch Super Strength Mailing Tape top and bottom. The joint ended up being VERY strong and light.

That was about 20 flights ago and I've had no problems with it.

Scotch Super Strength Mailing Tape is GREAT stuff. It's very light but adds a lot of strength. I also used it over the center joint of my wing when I initially built my Cub. My wing is surprisingly strong.

Good luck with your repair. Try to keep it as light as possible and it will turn out fine. Be careful with the epoxy. ALWAYS use 1/2 as much as you think you need!

Adding a pic isn't as straightforward as it should be. Below the text entry box is a "Attach file" area and a "browse" button.
Click the "browse" button and select the image file from your disk. It should then appear in your post when you click the "Submit Reply" button.
Test it to make sure you can make it work.

I posted a couple of weeks ago on the same subject. What I ended up doing wasa putting a very light coating of 5 minute epoxy on the break, and the covered the break with 3M packing tape. The joint has stood up to one loop so far.

There is no doubt that duct tape will fix the break. It's also very heavy and very ugly. It will work, though.
If the 3M packing tape is the kind with the fibers in it, it also is heavy, although not as heavy as duct tape.
What I like about the Scotch Super Strength Mailing Tape is that it's very light and virtually crystal clear.
Lightness is your friend.

For clarification I didn't use strapping tape. (The tape with the fibers running through it.) I've been a fan of 3M tape, because it works best for painting, so I use their CLEAR packing tape as well.

Thanks for the heads up on the paintability of the 3M tape - I'll have to check it ouit. It's probably just as light as the Scotch stuff. I just happened to have that around. I'm not sure how it takes paint - I've never tried.
It sounds like we fixed our breaks just about exactly the same.

I've used a toothpick as a splint towards the leading edge, ProBond to the edges of the tear/crack, and clear packing tape on the top and bottom for reinforcement and to contain the ProBond expansion. Next time it breaks right next to the tape!

I happened to look a little closer at my roll of Scotch Mailing tape - it's made by 3M. I wonder if we've been talking about the same stuff all along!
