My First Balsa Kit?

Hi all,

I am looking at building my first balsa kit and was after some feedback on what kit would be good for a first timer.

I have been flying for 3 years up to an Extra 30cc size so I don't really want to start on a trainer. Would like something reasonably sporty of mid size - could be glow, gas or electric.

One of the main suppliers in Oz has the following kits readily available without me having to resort to importing one from overseas. Is there anything in there that would be easy enough for a first time builder and give good sport/aerobatic performance?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Bob

Just did a quick look at the site you mentioned & any of the Sig 4 star series would be an easy build for a first timer. Either the 40 or 60. Nothing really complicated in the design & they fly great. Plenty of information on the web too if you would have any questions...Gene

I wish more modelers today would take the time to build a plane like you. It would help them with repairs on the ARF's and teach them allot about flying.
Even though you have been flying for three years you haven't built a kit yet so its like you have to build something in the beginner stage. You will have to learn about alignment , incedence, radio installation, covering etc. I have built all of these suggested kits. You want is a kit to build that will teach you the building and covering skills. All the ones listed below can do that. Actual flying and what the plane can do is secondary with your first build. . Stay away from the Balsa USA and Top Flight kits for a first build they can be a little overwhelming. I don't know what kind of covering material you have access to but if possible use Ultra Coat. Its very forgiving and can be removed if you mess up. Monocoat cant be removed you have to sand it off and its a mess. I have and only use the covering material from Hobby King nowadays its a great material and cost is very reasonable.

1. Sig Wonder Fun little plane, calls for a .15 but you can put up to a .25 on it, fast.
2. Sig Four Star .40 - Plane flys great shoot touch and goes with it, put a hot .46 on it fun to play around with.
3. Sig Kadet - Trainer nice easy relaxing flying put a .40 or .46 on it to cut up .

Many many thanks for your replies Gene and Nick. Appreciate it. Totally agree - I need to start on something simple even though the end result will be a trainer.

Going to go with the Sig Four Star .40 and will hopefully pull my finger out and post a build thread in here.

Thanks again,

Bob
