An "RC Christmas" for the Troops!

About 4 1/2 weeks ago I was blogging on In a thread for one of the planes I own, I came across a guy needing advice on his plane. His name is SPC Andrew Smith (Kafie) , and he's on duty as an Apache helicopter mechanic with the 1-211th Attack Helicopter Battallion ("The Corsairs", out of Utah), in Northern Afghanistan. Through our discussions I learned there were 15 guys in his unit who fly RC planes and helicopters. Being an Air Force veteran myself, an idea sparked in my mind that it would be great to send these guys some RC stuff for Christmas since they'll be far from home & family this holiday season.
After a couple phone calls and several emails, 5 RC hobby companies, 15 members of Stone Mountain RC Flyers (my club), 2 members of Fayette Flyers, 1 member of RCGroups, and my mother all came together and donated one big package (actually it ended up being 4!). Through all their efforts we accumulated 8 complete electric planes and 2 electric helicopters, with plenty of spare parts to keep them flying, as well as enough cash to pay for shipping.
Andrew and I talked a good bit through the RC Group's forum, and I've learned about his Battallion. I told him what we were doing, and he says the morale has already gone up drastically in anticipation of the package. Having a wife and daughter, and a son due in January, I can't imagine the depression of being away from them. Especially at Christmas time! I was single during my time in the military, so being away from home was manageable. Hearing from them the sadness of being away from family, but that they're feeling better about it because the stuff we're sending them will help keep their minds off the fact, is something I hope would inspire others to follow suit.
I'm not looking for kudos or any kind of recognition. I am however hoping to publically acknowledge the hobby companies and local people who came together as an example of what a community can do. And more importantly to encourage others to think about what they're able to do today because of these brave men & women who won't be home with family for Christmas as we are.

Here's what we sent:

4- Slow Sticks.
1- Slow Stick Pico.
1- Parkzone T-28.
1- Micro P-51 (w/ Tx, charger & lipos).
1- Micro J3 Cub (w/ Tx, charger & lipos).
