HobbyKing FlyCat EDF unit mounting
Hi everyone,
Newbie to EDFs here, just after some advice on assembling the first one. I've bought a FlyCat from HobbyKing, and the EDF mounting system does not match what's shown in the AllyCat manual (which seems to be what everyone is using to build it). There's the EDF unit, a thin plastic 'collar' that fits over the back and has a square mounting hole in it, and then the convergent pipe that slots into the other side of the collar.
It looks like the idea is to push the square balsa stick through the square hole on the collar, screw that onto the thin plywood stick, and glue the plywood stick to the foam. However, there are some issues with this:
- The balsa stick is going to collide with the intake lip on the EDF unit. Should I cut a slot in the lip to allow it to go through?
- The collar looks really weak; it might twist quite a lot when the EDF is applying thrust.
- It's not obvious how the collar gets held in the right position on the balsa stick. Just using friction? Or do I put a bit of glue on it?
Would someone mind explaining this to me?
Thanks in advance.
On a side note, on the other forums I've been on it's very much preferable to bump up an old thread on the same topic (eg. one of the FlyCat threads from 2010) rather than starting a new one. Is that also true here? If so I'll make sure that I use the old threads rather than starting new ones in the future.
