Hacker Q80-6L/33 extra 260

Hello, I am nearing completion of an aeroworks 33% extra 260.This is my first HV setup and would like some input as to my choices.First I will list the components.
98" extra.approx 23lbs
Hacker Q80 6L/mej.26x10TH
HV 160 v2
cc cap pack
Hitec 7955 dig x5
5800 mah 12s
cc pro bec 20a
The last item is my first question..I am running the bec directly off my 12s pack,I have bench tested this setup and works fine but there is no load on the servos. Is anyone running bec off 12s ? Would I be better off with a seperate lower voltage pack? I like the idea of using the bec as a bec.you will always have reciever power if the plane is able to fly, unless the bec fails .It could fail using a seperate battery as well! so here lies my delima...I guess what Im trying to ask is using a 50v input pushing it,are folks using them this way in giant scale planes? Any feedback on the bec or any other component, motor prop etc. would be great!! Thanks for your time.

I am running the AR 9110 in a extra 89" and a sebach 104", but I would not go for the BEC ( only one ? ) directly from 12S, I am running the 7955 from 2 x 2S Lifpo (A123) I have a Schottky diode in between. So that I can charge them as a 4 S lipo without disconnecting them.

The Schottky diode I found other people also using it in this combination. almost not direct on to the 2s Lifepo.

Bart,

I do use a BEC from 50 Volts in some of my models, but it's only used as one input into the battery backer, the other input being direct from a 2S A123 pack. This means that the model normally flies on the A123 pack, with the BEC acting purely as backup. I don't think I'd like to rely 100% on any BEC fed from a 12S pack.

Thank you so much for the replies! Can you tell me more about (the battery backer)?
And please do tell more about a Schottky diode.
* Its my first GS plane.

tileflier - what do you want to know? I have three larger models with battery backers using this system. My Tiger Moth uses an older basic Powerbox which is no longer available. My Aghusky uses a Powerbox Evolution - works very well. And my 1/3 Sopwith Pup is using an Emcotech DPSI RV Mini 5 purely because the switch was easier to hide on a model like this.

Hello,
Your motor and esc looks light and nice to me. 7955:s are great for 87-91" sized planes but I would suggest stronger HV digitals for this one, Hitec has many.
Prop. a bit to large (24 or 25" would be better) for 12s as it will pull too much current for your packs like +150A but on 10s the prop would work.
On my Pilot RC Sbach 342 107" i used two separate Spektrum AR7000 and one 1550mah 2s lipo for each receiver. Two servos and esc into one receiver and the rest into the other one. But one Spektrum AR9100 or the larger one with redundancy would work to.

Great! or a 150-160 kv motor would work too with the 12s, maybe a rimfire 65cc or something equal.

I had one for it but the bell would rub at a certian rpm,Thats why I went with a built in germany hacker. I still need to send the rimfire back to GP for replacment.

*according to hackers specs I should get around 236 watts per pound with the 10s 26x12.

Could the Rimfire be out of balance?
Hacker is a reliable motor for the larger planes and the new lightweighted series that you are looking for even better for 3D.
IMO 236 watts/pound is the sweet spot on a light airframe.

+1 on the lightweighted Hacker motors. I'm loving my Q80-8M on 12S in my 87" Sbach 300...286 watts/lb! Video and setup information below.

6 -7 min flight times are possible. Though I will set the timer to 5 min.
