Hi Guys,

I'm having a go at a composite model having been inspired by pdawg's and danj31's results. This is my first attempt at this so please be gentle

So far the fuselage plug is shaped and glassed awaiting for the epoxy to harden before more sanding.

Please feel free to comment and offer advice.

Seems like a F86 or a successor?

Looks like a fj fury to me with the down slanted cockpit and the spine down the fuse. Looks great so far stegla! What are you planning as far as a access hatch?

Indeed, I hope it will look a bit like the FJ-4.

I plan to have a hatch at the back underside for access to the motor and a removable canopy?............ But I'm open to suggestions.

the sweet thing about the FJ4 is that it has a decent inlet, and a HUGE wing...thats a good thing for these 40mm birds

An A-4 would make a sweet micro-jet

I've made a jig to hold the wing-root aerofoil shapes in place to make sure that they are square and both at the same incidence. I'm rigging the root at +1.5degrees and the tips will be zero degrees. The aerofoil is MH42.

I've managed to source most of my composite materials locally as there is a lot of boat chandlers here on Guernsey. I've had to send off for the glass cloth and the graphite powder........ Hope not to wait too long.

Just a little more work to do on the plug............... fair the wing roots and scribe the access hatches to make cutting them easier.

There's still a few problem areas that need attention............but we're getting there.

There's no hurry as some my composites shopping list has yet to arrive.

Hi guys,

One half of the mould has been completed and removed from the parting plane.

The next problem is finding a clear 6 hour uninterupted time window to mould the other half.

Looks great so far Stegla. How much glass went on to make the mold?

The mould layup went as follows...........

5 or more wax coats on the plug. Then 5 or more wax on the parting plane. any small gaps around the plug was filled with wax.

Blue pva sprayed on.

Gel Coat
1) resin + graphite powder
2) resin+ graphite powder+ colloidal silicon

Glass Cloth
3) 4 x 45g cloth
4) 4x 100g cloth
5) 4x 125g cloth
6) 4x 300g cloth
7) 1x 45g cloth

This lot soaked up over 1/4 litre of resin.
