The Depdart, lot of pics & Free Plans !
why keep your indoor-stuff in the closet till autumn, do something with it !!! (or leave it they'll eat dust ... )
For this reason i was in search of a nice flyer, wich would be capable of handling some wind. It had to be simple and not to big, so that it can be always in your car.
Finally, i found a nice plan: The Depdart.
It's an design of a Dutchman called Willem Bravenboer.
I was suprised by the plan, just because it's so simple

Ok, what do we need for this flyer:
- 1 x 24 grams brushless motor HXT 1700 Kv (a.k.a. the Blue Wonder)
- 1 x prop 6x4
- 1 propsaver
- 1 x 12A ESC
- 2 x 5 grams servo (i used HXT-500)
- music wire to bend linkages
- control horns
- some tape
- 6 mm foam like Depron
- foamsafe glue
- some rulers, a sharp knife, etc.
Most of your building time will be waisted by assembling the pages of the plans and taping them togehter, i hate this part of the job
If you did it right, it should look like this ... BTW: did i mention that is was a simple plan
After cutting the parts, you get this ... nice and simple is'n't it
Before i ad the glue i always pre-fit the parts. If you did a nice job on the cutting ... it will fit without any corrections. It'll look like this:
I had some scrap pieces of cover material, i gave it a try ... when you use your iron on a very low temperature, this works great. A test object ...
Here's the wing, i marked the ailerons for cutting them out of the wing. I beveled a 45 degree side on it and hinged them with oridinairy packing tape. Later on i re-inforced the wing with a 4 mm carbon tube.
Here's a picture of my iron skills. Just use a low temp and go quickly over the cover to attach it to the foam.

The 4 mm carbon tube is glued in, i always let it dry with some weight on it:
Here's a picture of the other side of the wing, with the carbon tube visible. I also added a couple of stripes, cause i want to know if i'm flying upside down or not ...

- motor 24 grams
- Lipo 70 grams
- ESC 15 grams
- Receiver 5 grams
- servo's 12 grams
- wire, horns, etc 15 grams
- airframe 50 grams ?
- cover 5 grams
Estimated Total: 196 grams
Here's my progress:
This is the motormount i will use, cause i didn't want the motor to get too far in front, i use this mount reversed. Therefore i had to remove a flange out of the mount. I did this with a small file.
Now this is the way i want ot mount my motor:
In the fuselage i had to cut out the room for the servo's:
This has to be done in the wing also, because they are glued together later on:
Here you can see the fuselage and the wing glued together, ik used UHU POR. I don't know if you quys know that stuff ? This way you get a real stiff servo-mount.
This is the motor i used, i already soldered 2 mm connectors. In this picture the prop saver is also mounted.
If you did a goog job on the cutting, the parts will fit together without any adjustments. I straightened out the underside of the fuselage and glued it in, the tabs will tell you were exactly ...
Now the upper part of the fuselage is glued in, i clamped the tail to be sure that this will be straight.
To mount the motormount i glued (epoxy) a couple of 1 mm ply strips to the front side of the fuselage. After that i drilled some holes for the screws. To be sure i taped the mount to the fuselage with glasfibre tape.
This is what it looks like when the motor is on the mount.
The controlhorns are glued into the wing and the servo's are already glued in place. Before glueing the servo's i taped them.
To connect the servo's i made a linkage by using 1 mm music wire. I made a z-bend at one side. The other side i mounted with quick links.
At the right-side of the fuselage i mounted the electronics, using Velcro. Be sure you test if you can achieve a good CG before placing all this stuff. As you can see, i'm not into 2.4 Ghz systems yet
At last i mounted the 6 x 4 prop and placed the Lipo at the distance for testing. De Depdart is on the CG-machine (Great Planes) now, so i can adjust the place for the Lipo a bit. Attention ! The Lipo must not be mounted on the upperside of the fuselage !!! This is just done for testing @ weighing out the CG !!!
Now the Depdart is ready Here are two pics for an overview:
I will put my Depdart on the scale to post the total weight. I'll be back soon EDIT: AUW (incl. Lipo) is 166 grams

i took the Depdart to teh field and it had it's maiden flight.
Cool Nice flyer.
Although it was a bit windy, the Depdart flew very good rolls, loopings, inverted, 1 meter turns, it does it all ...
In fact, it's so nice that i decided to build another one (so take yout popcorn , sit back and relax) I like this flyer so much that i always want to have
a Depdart in the car, everywhere i go ...

Now take your sunglasses ... What about this color ... "Oracover Fluor Yellow":
This thing would even be visible at night, i guess ...

Now my flying buddy was suprised by this flyer and liked it also very much. As a suprise, i will build him one as well. This "build" will show up next day's.

@Djacob7: the wing span is 71 cm, that will be about a bit more than 28 inch. Can you process the plans in pdf ? otherwise i can transform them to another file format ... let me know !

for a good visibility i had to "design" another scheme for the bottom wing.
So i took the cover and my knife again ...
With the iron on a very low temperature the cover sticks very well to the Depron.
I just wanted to ad another color ...
And again a Depdart is ready for the electronics

@Gene: thanks Your plane has a real fuselage But the looks are common ...
So, in our flying club there are more and more people interested. Maybe, there will be more people who like the fun of these gimmick's
I had to finish my second Depdart, so here are some pics:

By the way, mounting your RX antenna that way is not correct. You should never wind it back on itself, that detunes the RX and shortens the range. Install it so the very end is trailing behind, since the very end or tip of the wire is where the signal is received.
If you want a shorter length, then wrap it around a drinking straw like a coil, never over lapping the wire and leave about 35 cm at the end. It still will shorten the range, but not a worry for a park flyer. Or, google 'Tony's Fy Wire For Helicopter'.
