Question
winding packing

I'm just starting my first rewind on a 35-42 motor. I will be using 2 strands of 24swg wire and I was wondering if anyone with experience could advise me how many turns I'm likely to be able to wind on. On my trials I managed 11 but I'm not sure I could fill every pole like that.
Thanks

What you could do to determine how many turns you can get on is to do a test where you wind 11 turns on one arm and then go to the next arm (one to the left or right of the arm you first wound) and try and wind the same 11 turns. That should give you an indication of how easy the later winding will be.

Thanks Skysailor, I have tried a full wind this afternoon but I must admit it's pretty untidy. Squeezing in the eleventh turn on some of the poles looks a strand too far. I wound it AabBCcaABbcC and I've just given it a quick try on the bench. With a 11"x 6" on it's only drawing 6 amps @ 11volts, i.e. less than 50 watts. Maybe I'd better check my winding pattern!!!
Thanks anyway.

What did you use for a pattern?

If it is a 12N14P motor you can see a wind image by entering 12 for Slots and 14 for Magnetpoles here:

http://i.caendle.de/dev/test2/

That will produce an image of the AabBCcaABbcC scheme you said you used. You can also get by going to the Advanced mode, entering the AabBCcaABbcC scheme, and 14 Magnetpoles.

As far as getting all of the turn on, are you threading the last turn or two through? Or does there appear that doing that would help?

There is a description of how to thread turns here if you are not familiar with that:

6A * 11V = 66W

Did you terminate it delta or Y?

How much current does it draw with no load?

Do you have a way to measure RPM?

jackerbes and C4H10, thank you both very much for your helpful replies. The winding pattern which I used is that shown on http://i.caendle.de/dev/test2/, (AabBCcaABbcC) connected in delta . Off load it was drawing about 0.6 amps. As to revs, at the moment my rev counter is u/s, (PP9 battery flat). Last night however I spun the motor up on an electric drill and measured the output voltage across the phases. Two phases were about equal but the third phase was about 30% down. I am going to tear down the wind this afternoon and check the winding as it comes off. I am a bit reluctant to haul the wire very sharply over the stator edges in case of shorting to stator. I may therefore round off the top and bottom stator edges a little and give it a thin coat of epoxy to protect the wire as it rounds the corners. Anyway, thank you both again for your advice. I'll get peeling my wire this afternoon.

Edited :- As I suspected, bum winding, I had wound the last two poles of phase No3 both anticlockwise. Ah well, like Robert the Bruce's spider, try, try again!!!

It is a merciless thing isn't it? This business of having to get the windings the same as the diagram?

And what really makes me mad is when it takes me several tries to spot a mistake...

Insulating and re-insulating stators is the hardest part of rewinding, here are some of the thread I have bookmarked about it:

Stator coating - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1702834

Removing old windings? - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1709338

Stator insulation & Epoxy - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1582786

Stator insulation paper - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1273263

zeroback's thread on and success with powder coating at home shows a lot of promise, that is in the first thread linked above.

I also have have some luck with using strips of Tyvek paper (obtained from USPS Priority Mail envelopes) to insulate with. Some details on how I did that here:
