Got some work done on #567. Keel to hull joint sanded. Rudder is installed and sheer strips glued in and sanded. Deck beams next.

Greetings,

I am also in for the duration! Now for the hard questions, like how big is she and how to I buy a hull? I have always wanted a J class!

Million dollar question. How do you fair in the lead to the gel coat without killing it?

You have to paint the lead anyway and it is nearly impossible to color match the gel coat, so don't worry about it. Just don't use too coarse of a paper when fairing that will require you to fill the scratches before priming. Even if you do make some deep scratches it will just add a step to painting process.

Once properly sanded, primed and painted (and maybe clear coated and polished, depending upon your finishing preference) you won't see a difference in the surfaces.

Gel coat is just a harder more pigmented version of the resin used in the layup of the hull. It is there to make the underlying surface more resistant to damage and to provide a nice hard surface to sand prior to painting.

Great build log. Thanks for sharing your work. If I could make a request, can you share your methods for alignment and installation of the rudder tube and radio board. Everything looks so clean. Any secrets?
