Dumas 1241 1938 Triple Cockpit Barrel Back

Hi All,
Sorry to post this again but I'm reluctant to move on until I work out where I may have gone wrong here.
The sideboards are somewhat free form and the templates are to check profiles at various bulkheads. I feel like my deck is flatter than the templates would suggest yet the camber on the deck is pretty much fixed by the shape of the upper deck frames.
Have any other builders had problems in this area?
I can still sand the sideboard to what looks and feels right but I'm curious about the vertical height gap indicated by the inside edge of the template.

Cheers,
David

Hi David,

When I made mine, I had enough mahogany on it to sand the sideboards to the countours (or very near) to the templates.

David, It has been quite awile, but are the templets for after you skin it with Mahogany? If so, as Kip said, I'd just run with it. Harry

Hi Kip,
An extra 1/16" build up would help but the templates should be right for the balsa stage rather than the finished stage. I checked back on the frame where the upper deck pieces were pressed out from and there's no way the side of the deck is high enough to end up matching the templates I have. Visually it's not going to be obvious so I will just make the most of what's there.

Cheers,
David

On my 1940 barrel back the sideboards are glued up strips of mahogany 1/16" x 3/4" and it matched up fairly good when I got all the mahogany on,a little bit of planning and sanding and she's looking pretty good. Ron.

Hi Ron,
3/4" sounds easier to apply than 1/8" strips. The 1938 barrel back requires tapered and beveled 1/8" strips to cover the sideboards - something I'm not looking forward to. I would have thought some very thin sheet veneer would be the way to go but I'm sure they had their reasons.

Cheers,
David

Hi David, Here's a pix of my ten year old Barrelback (w/cat) The 1/8 inch strips for the covering boards really wasn't that hard, just took some time. I can't see using 3/4 for this as there is a fairly radical turn, But I could be wrong. The 19' Barrelback uses solid as the triple uses 1/8" strips. If you are going to paint the covering boards black it really isn't a problem as paint hides alot. Good luck and keep us posted. Harry
