Video format problem

I'm using a Mac Powerbook G4, and OS X 10.4.5.

Microsoft is no longer supporting the Windows Media Player for Macintosh computers. I have the latest version (version 9) of Windows Media Player, (downloaded again from the Microsoft web site immediately before posting this message to confirm the problem), and a great many of the videos are completely unviewable - I get a notice "The playlist format is not recognized". For example, these recent postings are ALL unviewable:

Those using older software to create their .wmv files are viewable - but thanks to Micro$oft, those using newer software cannot share their videos with anyone but another Micro$oft user. An example of a .wmv file that IS viewable:

Why so many examples of what I can't see? I had to go through that many of the most recent video posts before I could find one I could view. Frustrating? Darn right!

I would like to see a very strong suggestion that anyone posting a video do so in a non-proprietary format that IS supported for all computers, such as mpeg.

I moved your thread to Site Chat forum where others can join the discussion.

On to the issue: I agree that WMV should die a painful death, but we live in the imperfect world. Quick Google search reveals these links:
Have you tried Flip4Mac components for WMV9 playback?

This sounds interesting. If the "Studio" version works for exporting .wmvs from iMovie then that constraint from doing video for reviews in "the preferred format" is removed..... I'll have to take a look at this more closely when I get home to my Macs.

I am running MacOS 10.3.9 on a Titanium PowerBook and I am having a hard time viewing most of the videos. I also strongly support that the movies should be posted in an platform-independent format. Afterall, wasn't that the promise of the Web?

Funny, I thought those TV ads with the MAC and PC guys and the Japanes camera girl says
" Everything just sort of works with a MAC"

My big complaint was videos posted in QuickTime. Installing the player on my PC was a mess.
It wanted to take possession of all video formats. I finally found a plug-in that worked.

The wmv format allows for smaller files than mpg, and the compression "looks" better.
Perhaps you can find a converter, or ask Apple for a solution. Like it or not the rest of the PC world is moving away from you.

I use both PCs and a Macs, and I think the Mac is a better platform. The fact that Microsoft does not support a particular platform does not make that platform inferior. PCs crash more often, based on first hand experience. I need a lot more IT support when I am running PCs compared to Macs. I think Web-based services should be designed in a way to avoid the monopoly of one particular platform or company. That is the golden standard I use when I am evaluating any web site.
