In flight spar failure w/onboard video - DOH!

If you have followed my "Depron Dragon" threads you might remember I had the original goal to use all depron in the wings - even for the main spar... well after my in-flight wing failure (many months ago) I ended up installing a bit of CF the full length of the center panel to prevent this from occuring again.

I've had dozens of fully laiden flights since, even in horrendously bumpy conditions (Moab - Arches Nat'l) and I've had no worries about the wing now...

Anyway, I'm just getting around to posting the "spiral of death" that occured when the all depron spar failed in a medium-g turn... probably my 3rd flight with the "Dragon" fully loaded...

Fortunately and surprisingly no damage was done to any of the electronics or camera eqt... I think the spinning slowed the descent way down!

.
Back when I was flying Wakefield rubber powered models..

"How many turns do I put in the motor?"
"Wind it 'til it breaks, then back off a turn."

Jack,
Sorry to hear about the crash but Im glad you are back and running.
I have hung up the pinkfoam and order a bunch of depron and carbon.
I build a small section and can't believe how strong it gets when builtup as opposed to how week it feels in sheet form. But anyway when you get a chance I have a couple question since we seem to have about the same Video and Photo payload. Probable will help others as well since many seem to be following your lead and we are all carring some payload.(Thank You)

Did your original spar have any carbon?

What size carbon did you add, and I assume you added to just the center panel?

Did you cap the spar top and bottom or just one side?

I have tryed several glues CA/bakingsoda,Gorilla,Epoxy, all seem stonger than the depron, What did you use on yours?

Did you use 2mill for everything in the wing except 6mill grey spar?

Last one. Wing rods I got are 1/8 solid carbon and 3/16 carbon tubes with 1/8 ID for the joiners. Is that about the right size. Believe you had used metal tubes, do you think that would work better than carbon tube? Not sure about the split strength of the cabon tubes.

Thanks Again

I have always liked the picture you use of the little dog about to rip someone to shreads, there has to be a story behind that too
