Complete a Project in 2014 Build Off - ONLY TWO MONTHS TO GO!!!

21/11/2014: Monza Red finished his long running "Pushy Cat"

Sept 27th. Owlsabies Electra has flown and he is delighted with it

Sept 10th. Owlsabies "Electra" is finished and waiting for suitable weather for test flights.

JULY 31st - five months to go! Ten completed entries (but three of these are from the prolific HarryD). Fifteen build logs running, but there seems to be little activity on most of them recently (including mine for the Avian!). SO.....still five months to go, but don't leave it until the last minute and miss this opportunity to complete that model - you KNOW you want to!

July 10th; brokenspar has finished and flown his Shereshaw Miss Exchange Club

July 26th: John38 has finished his big and beautiful Shereshaw Cumulus, currently awaiting final colour trim and testing.

To quote the quiz master of the popular UK "Mastermind" TV quiz when the buzzer signifying the end of a contestants 2 minutes interrupts a question – "I've started so I'll finish....." So rather than starting a fresh build off for "new" models immediately I propose a 12 month "Complete a Project" build off for next year. If there is evidence of sufficient interest I would be happy to add a new build off, possibly for unconventional vintage subjects later in 2014, probably a six month one starting 01/07/2014.

Here, hopefully, is an incentive to finish one – or more – of those uncompleted models which most of us seem to have around the workshop. Surely it makes sense, after spending time and materials on a model to finish and fly it rather than have the part completed airframe gathering dust and taking up storage space?

The idea stems from the number of models which have been started during the four build offs I have enjoyed administering over the last two years. In many cases build logs have been started and show substantial progress, even to the level of practically completed airframes in some cases. The last – Biplane Plus – build off which ended on 31/12/2013 is a case in point. From the 35 entries build logs for 14 entries not completed by the deadline show varying amounts of progress upto "nearly done". I would love to see them all completed, along with many others from the previous three build offs. Who knows, Brian (Brokenenglish) may even finish his Slicker from the Britkit Build Off!

Of course, entries are not restricted to partially completed models from the build offs, so why not take this opportunity to complete that model you started with such enthusiasm last year, last decade or last century! You must have fancied it at the time, so it surely must be worth finishing.

Although the build off will be based, as usual, in the "Vintage and Old Timer" forum, I do not want to unduly restrict entries so am not proposing to set any "not later than" dates or other qualifying criteria for the models. I also propose to allow as entries models which have been obtained partially built from another builder (in fact one of my two entries will be in that category as it was started by a dear late friend) and also models which require rebuilding/refurbishing either after substantial damage or degeneration over time. As usual, in any case of doubt I will be happy to advise if a particular project is eligible.

All that is required is that you notify an entry on this build off thread with a photograph of the model as it stands at the time of making the entry. If you already have a build thread running for the model (as is the case with those uncompleted models from the various build offs) simply continue to update that, but it would be a big help to me in keeping track of things if you would, via the "Edit" and "Go Advanced" functions change the heading of post number 1 to read (Model name) "for the Complete a Project Build Off". If there is no existing build log for the model, there is no requirement to start one (although as always it is nice if you do so we can all enjoy your adventures, please use the format above as the heading if you do), to qualify for the final poll at the close of the build off all you need to do is post a second picture, this time of the finished model when completed, on this build off thread. The model does not need to have flown by the closing date, but if it has flying photos or a video are always of great interest to everyone.

There seems to be a concensus towards a 12 month period, so the build off will run for the whole of 2014, starting on 1/1/2014 and closing at midnight on 31/12/1014.

As before I will maintain a list of entries with links to build logs in this post.

Over to you..............

Wonderful, George! You've come through for us all yet again.

Here's my first entry. It's based on a design called the Super Murgatroid, which was apparently sort of designed by a fellow named Joost Bakker several years ago. I say "sort of designed" because although there are various photos and posts about it on the Internets, there are none of a completed model and it's not certain if there ever was one. The only "plans" available consist of a few letter-size sheets with rough, hand-drawn pencil sketches on them.

Anyway, the picture posted here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...ostcount=12106 and below was all I needed to let me know I just had to have one. So I downloaded the pencil sketches, taped them together, photographed and cleaned them up, drew up a CAD plan, and started building. I made a LOT of modifications, some from purely practical considerations, others just because I wanted to. In fact, I made so many changes that I don't think it can be called a Super Murgatroid any more. In my own mind, I've just been calling it the Murg.

I started building last June, but because of the flying season and various other things, I didn't get further than the fuselage and tailfeathers. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...ostcount=12343

I really want to see this thing flying so it will be my first entry in your Buildoff (there will be at least four more from me).

I haven't started a build log yet but will do so in the New Year when your Buildoff starts and I pick up the build again.

I'm also delighted to hear about your proposed "Unconventional" buildoff. My first entry in that will be the rather unlikely Rassitoodus (picture below). I have the plans and am raring to go on that too. Did you really mean 1 Jan 2014 for the start of that buildoff? Great if you did (I can multitask OK) but whenever you say would be good too.

I'm really looking forward to getting down to building this winter, thanks in very large part to buildoffs like these. Thanks again for doing them!

Good stuff John, Harry. I think we need a bit of a rest from new commitments so no, I did mean 1st July for a new six month Build Off for unconventional, and I'll probably stick to that unless there is a great rush of people begging to start earlier.

Actually Harry one of my two complete a project entries is a canard, a somewhat modified version of a design called Can-Can.

I think I should be able to finish the Eaglet before the end of this contest.

I'll go make the changes today on the thread starter.

What a great idea sundancer!

I'd like to add my Ben Buckle great news, which was coming along ok until a few years ago and progress halted. Sometimes it just seems like I hit a bit that's awkward or I'm unsure of and before you know it gets sidelined and then collects dust. Wing is complete and covered, fuselage is mostly done but I got stuck making something silly like a cowl and then was distracted by a woman

Welcome to the Build Off - I have posted your entry. Looks like most of the hard work is done so I look forward to seeing the finished model.

Just been browsing the outerzone for unconventional models for later on in the year and I think I'll take the 'Hook' for that one.

Hi slam

A bit of clarification please; is the entry the Sky Buggy and if so is it actually started? The idea behind this particular build off is that it is to encourage completion of part built models, both those incomplete after previous build offs and any others which might be laying around, sometimes (as is the case with my two) for years or even decades, so if it is a brand new build it doesn't really fit the criteria.

Certainly does Geoff, I'll post it as an entry. Will you continue using the same build thread? If so it would be a help to me if you altered the heading on post #1 as described.

If I can figure out how, I will. I'm a bit of a dolt with computers.

Thanks,
