GWS Formosa hover 2s or 3s?

Hi guys,
atm i'm running my formosa mk1 on a 2208 1450kv motor with a 0705 apc prop on 3s, it gives me a nice turn of speed but not the thrust I am looking for in order to try hovering etc. My question is, could I drop the voltage down to 2s and use a 1047 prop instead yet remain within the 15A tolerance of the motor and 30A tolerance of the esc?
Any powerplant suggestions for this aircraft would be appreciated as I would rather not waste oney experimenting too much
Thanks,
James

You are at the point where a watt meter is almost a necessity to evaluate different set-ups.

A 2s batt. will give you less power. Better to max out the 3s. That's where the meter comes in.

With a small enough motor (light) it'll fly GREAT and easily hover on 2s. I put a B20S into mine long before the flat-foam 3D ships became so popular, it was great!! Still have it, in fact, but prefer my Addiction and Katana MD for that type of flying..

Hover a Formosa? That would take more skill than I have, I think. It's not a 3D plane, it's a pattern plane.

As for the necessary thrust... WebOCalc tells me you'll get 20 oz. of thrust at 2S, 15 amps, with an APC 9x4.5 prop. That's with your 1450 Kv motor.

It's easy to hover. Easier than the 3DX was, in fact, but not as easy as the Addiction. .. and I'm not much of a "3D" pilot.

I think prop has a lot to do with it - more pitch than you would expect. I have a 9x6 on mine.

I used a 1400kv 2408-21T with a GWS 8x4 HD prop on 1300 3S packs and as mentioned about, it's easy to hover.

3s 1300 = 2s 2100 in terms of weight, and probably more efficient. Nice.

Yeah, I've gone that way for combat/foamies with outrunners..

Hey netdudeuk, what part of the uk are you from? Thats the setup I was looking at getting, but seeing as how cheap the 2s batteries are, I may order one of those too And a new prop adapter seeing as I lost mine with my nicest balanced prop last night mid flight
Thanks,
James

Are you a member of the BMFA ? You really need to be to get insurance.

There are many affiliated clubs that can be joined to meet with like-minded people. My local club costs 40 per year plus the just under 30 for the BMFA membership.

^^^ for a small (regular size) Formosa, a 3S/1300 battery, a 20-25A ESC, a motor capable of 150-200 watts (say, 15-18 amps at 3S power) and about 1200-1300 Kv... with an 8x6 prop.

This isn't the most efficient power combination, but will yield good speed. For more efficiency, lower the motor Kv a bit and go with a slightly bigger prop.
