Build Log
Martian Space Ship

Some of my friends think I'm borderline insane. I may have just crossed the border with this build. Roy Clough's lifting body design has long intrigued me and it's time to tackle this sucker. The 1954 design was intended for 049 powered free flight. In the early 1980s some guys started building enlarged versions for RC, with varying degrees of success. My version will be original size (about 34 inches long), electric RC. It should be an interesting build with some even more interesting trimming sessions.

Flew the English version from the Aeromodeller plan back around 1985 - FF with a Dart 0.5cc diesel.

It had this interesting little 'wobble' in roll when under power - just rolled a few degrees each way all the time the engine was running. Otherwise, a good, steady flier that always stopped the show. Good luck with the electrocution

Wow, Pete! Good luck. I also have downloaded those plans from the internet and always thought this would be a neat project. Good Luck and I'll be watching.

I've seen a few of these things at the RC Nats, in the UK.

They remind me of Saturday-morning cinema ... Flash Gordon with Buster Crabbe.

Quite, quite, mad.

Nice project - I've often looked at the more 'unusual' plans that appeared in Aeromodeller and thought I might have a go, but something more conventional always jumps the queue.

Can't wait to see pics of yours flying.

I saw one of these fly at SEFF a few years ago, I've been threatening to build one ever since.
Looking forward to your spaceship.

Here's some pictures of the one that flew at SEFF.

Wow......I will follow this thread with great interest....
Yep I agree....very 'Flash Gordon'...

Also, craft-wise, this build has to be enjoyable for all who love to work with wooden structures....

I found a few Youtube-clips on the "thing":

I made one of these last winter and tried it out at Middle Wallop at Easter. It had an electric motor but I must have over-powered it - when I launched it, it accelerated away but rolled over and rolled into the ground. It is not very sturdy ...

At the same time, another modeller had a 'Windbag' - the Aeromodeller version - which flew very well with a Dart diesel.

For those of you who are building the Clough "Martian Space Ship",you can listen to the original 1935 radio programs of Flash Gordon while you build at http://archive.org/details/Flash_Gordon1935.

And if you want to watch the old Flash Gordon movie serials go here: http://archive.org/search.php?query=...sh%20Gordon%22
