HobbyWow Zhiyun Z1 b3-Axis Gimbal

We take a look at a hand held gimbal for multiple uses at the field.

Zhiyun Z1-Smooth Smooth-C Smooth-R 3-Axis Brushless Handle Gimbal Stabilizer

When I was contacted by HobbyWow about reviewing a hand-held gimbal I had to think about it. While not directly RC related there are times when I wish I had something like this at the field. When we are shooting video for reviews we sometimes have to get creative to come up with cool shots. I have often thought that a hand-held gimbal might do the trick. I have gone so far as to take a gimbal off a quad and try to make it hand-held. The other use I had for this unit was to shoot video at big events like Joe Nall. This year we are going to try and do live Google hangouts from events and this gimbal will be just the thing for that. So with all those needs in mind I said yes!

GoPro Mount

While I do intend to use this with my iPhone for interviews I also want to use my GoPro. Here is a mount you can purchase separately just for that. It works with a GoPro 3 or 4. I tried my Dazzne cam but it would not fit. This unit is an additional $19.99.

These are great for shows and flyins. Whether you're just cruising the flight line or reporting in an event, a stabilized video is so sweet!

Previous version of this unit showed pictures of the GoPro camera simply mounted like you would a phone. Have you tried mounting it in place of the phone to see what happens?
Vendor/Manufacturer website also showing the GoPro mounted differently then you have it and this would possibly allow your other camera to mount, did you not notice this?

Just curious and asking these question because I'm interested in this product or similar and want/need info, thanks....

I have not but I'm almost certain that it wouldn't work.

The only CON is no 1/4-20 threaded camera mount.

I've never understood the desire to take handheld video with a Gopro. Stabilized or not, Gopro's have such a wide field of view that they push the subject too far back. They are ideal for panoramic views or mounting close to your body (such as on a bike or surfboard facing towards you) but for filming objects fairly far away such as anything RC they are simply terrible. All you end up viewing is a dot moving around the screen, unless you crop in dramatically.

You are much better off using a traditional camcorder with zoom capabilities and learning to use it smoothly or incorporate a tripod. That $200 would be much better spent towards something like this with a $15 tripod. (my 1/2 cent worth)http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...AYVXE37YW0WAC8

I have multiple camcorders with nice zooms and tripods. I wanted to add this to arsenal. It will probably be used with my iPhone 6 and external mic for live event interviews at events. With that said, it will also be used for cool shots of planes in reviews.

I can see it being a nice addition for unique camera angles if you already had camcorders for primary recording purposes. I love Gopros, I've had a couple for years and have used them extensively but they are very specialized in what they can do. (well)
