SketchUp: NCGen - Automatic Airfoils

I've been doing some coding I've been meaning to get to for a long time now to automatically generate airfoils with Sketchup. There have been simple dat file loaders people have designed in the past that work well for dropping in a single non-scaled airfoil, but there was a lot missing to complete a wing.

This extension now allows for some specific parameters to be used to define a wing with a single "draw" button.

This allows:
  • One click user parameter defined wings directly into Sketchup.
  • Two more clicks to transform the wing into a 4 axis CNC wire tool path.
    OR
  • Easily skinned shapes (with other extensions like Fredo's Curviloft) to complete a wing model.

Outstanding!

For the non NACA airfoils can you specify different root and tip airfoils?

Yes you can!
...but only 4 digit as of right now.

I'm working on the ability to load different root and tip foils as well, but if the data count is different, the solution becomes more difficult... we will get there eventually.

Is the problem different numbers of segments in the different airfoil plots? Would something like a weld tool followed by division of the resulting "line" work?

Yes the problem is the number of points, and to directly to your question, the answer is no, but, yes there are work around using other extensions...

I should say that the issues isn't so much as drawing them, they can have any number of segments. It's when the next step is taken and hot wire tool paths are created they must be equal...

Short term, I will have a warning to advise the user of the situation.
Long term, the wire path tool just needs to get smarter.

For years I have used Martin Hepperle's program ConCord to convert all kinds of airfoil data to DXF for import into SketchUp and other CAD. It has the ability to normalize the number of segments —a user specified number— so you can mix NACA foils with other foils.

THANK YOU for that link. I have been having a problem with the airfoil.dat importer plugin in Sketchup with some airfoils. Not all, but some. Running them through that "smoother" fixed the problem.
