Zwarte Zee Tug advice

Hi All!

I recently aquired a built 1:50 scale Zwarte Zee!
The boat a assume was built in the late 60's, 1.57m long and swings a 95mm 4 blade prop!
She has a Taplin twin 8cc diesel motor in her running through a reduction box.
I want to remove the diesel and fit a brushless motor, dont want all the vibration and noise from the diesel in the old girl!
Any sugestions as to the motor and speed control combination will be much apreciated!

That is a cool boat. 95mm prop is about 3.75 US inches. That is a big wheel! My thoughts would be to go brushed with 2 big 700-900 12v motors on some type of reduction gear, either 2:1-4:1, turning a single shaft. She looks like you will have room for a couple of 12v SLA batteries.

Nice aquistion! Good luck with the project.

Very nice find. That is one monster tug. Fantastic detail and very well built. I would think possibly a 12 v. window crank motor would have sufficient torque to turn that big prop with no problem. As mentioned, a large SLA batt. or two should keep you boating all day.

You could sell the diesel on Evil bay for a stack of $$$ (Enuff to by another boat!!)

Go with a geared brushed motor one of my mates has a ZZee with a geared motor and it is still pretty quick

If it has a clutch and reverse, I wouldn't touch it. You don't just find something that well-built and unique every day.

If it's 'always-go' and way too fast, then yeah, I'd pull the motor and restore it, and put in a big low-KV inrunner. I would say 2000 RPM at the prop should be enough.

Hi,
Nice find, you need no more than 1500-1800 RPM at the prop and surprisingly little power, about 150 watts max, Brushless motors that have a low enough Kv for direct drive are almost always very large in power handling but the motor will only draw low current if set up for low RPM.

For direct drive, a 300 Kv motor on 6 volts will draw about 20 amps so a 30 amp ESC minimum, 12 volts a 150 Kv motor and will draw about 10 amps, note the power is exactly the same and battery volume for the same runtime will also be the same so there is no real advantage for either system other than IMO getting a somewhat smaller motor for the 6 volt system

say this

with any car or boat ESC with reverse and over 30 amps and 2S capable.

Cheers
Nick

Thanks for the kind words Gents!
That belt drive is cool!
Hope to do something like that!
Been brousing hobbyking inrunners with water cooling, but my buddy says inrunners have less low rmp torque thean the outrunners so I guess I must look at the outrunners then!
A belt drive will also be quieter than a gear drive so thats a bonus!

Got the diesel motor to turn by hand last night with some heat from a hair dryer!
The motor was solid with I guess +-40 year old fossilized Castor oil!

The motor needs a soak in methanol (glow fuel) it will disolve the gummed up castor oil. Inrunner would be ok with a big gear reduction but Outrunners in this application would need no cooling at all and the range of Kv is much more suited to this boat as well. inrunners are generally used in go fast type boats.

HI Nick!

Was hoping not to strip the motor out, the entire drive train came out with me having to loosten 11 screws!
Want to give her a run once clean and then oil to preserve!

Wow that is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!! I have an old English model railway Magazine (Somewhere at Dads place) featuring one of those motors driving a functioning scale O gauge Diesel Hydraulic locomotive... I knew I'd seen that motor before!!

Its a great find and as I said in the earlier post probably worth a chunk of cash to a collector!!

Cheers Bruce

Hi Bruce!

Selling the motor is an option BUT for me there’s nothing better than fondling a well-made classic piece of engineering!
Plan is to clean the motor and gearbox get it to run once and then polish it up for a display on the shelf next to the tug.
The gearbox has a forward, neutral and reverse gear!
Must have taken the builder forever to build!
Your buddys tug allks awesome!

That's awesome. I can just imagine some guy at the pond asking what it's got for running gear, and you saying "a diesel engine" . The reactions would be priceless! Not to mention that engine sound effects are completely unnecessary.
Keep the diesel; electricity is the devil!
