Help!
How do you use aero-mat?

A friend wants to use aero-mat to stiffen a large fuse. I got some at Toledo 20 years ago but have never tried to use it for anything so I'm at a loss here. How would I go about doing it?

I did a search but no luck..

Thanks..

I used it for vacuum infusion for our HO-229 center sections. It worked very well in that application, but it is heavy due to the resin it holds. I wouldn't recommend its use in a simple fuselage like the A10, balsa or airex/ rohacell sheets would be as strong and lighter.

I have also been using it as a bulker for molds and mold flanges. It works great for this IMO.

Thanks. Confirms my suspicions. He wants to use in a 1/4 Zlin. Rohacell was my first thought but he wanted to use the mat. I did a sample for him last nite but haven't looked at it yet. Too busy raking leaves!~!

I use carbon tow 12K strands laminated between the first and second layers on my fuselages. Dirt cheap super light and can be hand laid. For my big Eurofighter I did a diamond and box pattern around 3" apart. Made the fuselage so stiff it feels like 12 oz cloth layup. I may have added 2oz to the entire fuselage. Cost me about a dollar per fuse and thats 76" long x 15" width fuse. Layer 1, 2oz cloth then CF tow then 5.7oz cloth finish. I'm super pleased with this method and will use on all my layups from now on. Also, a neat stiffening trick is a simple paper towel pressed in to the walls when finished. Also, soaks up excess resin that would have sat on the surface anyhow on a hand layup. Sometimes a basic cheap approach works quite well.

See example layup here. I could not believe the difference in stiffness compared to other layups that I did not use it on.

i have used it for core in the wings of my F-20's i lay alyer of 1.4 oz. and layer of 2.0 ...not overly wet then the areo mat and a layer of 2.0 oz. that last layer i thin the epoxy then bag it .i dont soak the material in resin .it would work well for a fuse. its easy to cut and way less money than roahcell.

I laid up a sample the other day and we think it will work perfect for dampening vibration in his fuse. Didn't add as much weight as we thought it would while adding stiffness.

Thanks for the responses.

If it's Lantor Soric (Aero-Mat), then it's designed for resin infusion. It's a core/bulker material, saves a fair amount of weight over an all-glass lamination. Not optimum for hand laid or vacuum bagged structures as other core materials can be much lighter, but if the weight is acceptable it can work decently.
