Dave,

Nice choice! Are you going to detail this one or just fly it

OK, so now I am confused. Is this the Dare kit or are you building from the plans?

At the same size as Mike's or larger/smaller?

Mike's plans. I am modifying the structures to how I like to build. I like his outlines and idea but I have grown particular about how I want things to go together. I have also traced his 0-400 and redrawn it to suit. That will be built for the Muncie Flying Aces contest after this.

Top wing is framed and I decided I didn't like my fuselage, the prow in particular. I plan on staining mine and did not like the separated nose block or the way the bottom of the step was sheeted. Sooo, I redrew the whole thing and put the scale concave and convex portions on the float bottom and reprojected all my formers so they would fit what I drew. I also formalized the magnetic hatch design. I made a sample prow with scale sheeting and really liked it. Now to build the real part. More pix tomorrow I hope.

OK, finally progress! I am now a bit happier with fuselage #2. A little more sanding and then I will put the tail pylon on tonight and stain it.

I have both the Dare M-5 kit stashed, plus the larger semi kit from Sparky, both put back for a rainy day.

Will keep an eye on this build thread.

(Charlie, sorry to hear that you can't make it to SMALL this year...you will be missed!)

Nice Dave. Will be nice seeing your rendition.

Sparky's Macchi is simply gorgeous. I love watching him fly it, but, he doesn't bring it out often enough. One of those planes I just love to watch drift around.

Thanks Tom. I'll miss being there too. I won't miss the humidity though It is still the best flyin I've ever attended.

OK, a little progress. The first two pictures are of the top wing. It is framed and rough sanded. You will note I build the ailerons into the wing and then cut them out, that way everything fits and the washout is consistant. The rest are of the fuselage after panel lines, nails, staining, and Polycrylic. Still need to do something with the cockpit. Bootom wings are framed but not sanded.

Looks great Dave, I especially like the staining. It should look sharp on the pond out back. This seems like the perfect sunset flyer.

Fantastic work on the redesigned hull, the consistent grain really sets if off. I'll be watching this one!

Good subject Dave. I've considered building the Midkiff and Sparky's M5 kits for quite some time. The Italian vintage seaplanes are beautiful. Like yourself, I'm sure I'd bash most balsa seaplane hulls a bit to suit my own desires. I'll watch this one.
