Build Log
Canarrow Electrified

I saw this sailplane in Model Aviation awhile ago. It was designed by Daniel Fritz, and after reading about it and looking at it, I knew I just had to have one. It's main wing is 2 meters, and the canard part is 1 meter.

I have never built a canard, and honestly I don't really understand the reason someone ever conceived a canard, but I'm diving into this project and hope to learn as I go.

I ordered the plans a few weeks ago and I ordered the wood from National Balsa last Sunday. You can order the short kit from Natl. Balsa for $75, and it includes the wing and canard ribs as well as the formers, but after looking at the plans I decided to just cut the parts out myself. My wood order has been "processing" for a week, so hopefully they will ship it this week!

I'm curious, where are you going to mount the motor? Not that I am against it, just wondering

Getting my Canarrow to balance will involve modifying the nose. After getting input from Daniel, who's is a really nice guy and even returns my emails, and my friend Mark, aka Buzzfly, who is very smart when it comes to just about everything, here's what I'm going to do....

I will cut off the nose, mount the motor right in front of the canard, and move the battery to the rear of the fuse. I might have to widen the fuse rear to make the battery fit. I'll have to make a wiring harness to connect the batter to the speed control, but that's easy to do.

Cutting off the nose will mean that I am tinkering with Daniel's design, and removing one key feature. The plane was designed with a longish nose to protect the canard during a cartwheel landing. As Mark pointed out, I don't really do cartwheel landings anymore. So a short nose s what we shall have.

I'll be using a Suppo 2814-8, which is an awesome motor. It's light (3.5 oz) and powerful. I have the same motor in other 2 meter planes in the same weight range as the Canarrow, and it give a steep, fast launch.

I have enough scrap balsa and plywood to make all of the ribs, doublers, and formers.

I spent a few evenings making templates for all of the ribs and such. The plane needs 10 each of ribs 1 and 2, and 2 each of ribs 3 through 13. I made the patterns from posterboard for all of the parts except ribs 1 and 2. Because in need 10 each, I made basswood templates and stacked balsa blanks between them. Then I can carve and sand 10 ribs at once.

Here's what my work looks like s far.

Ribs

All of the wings ribs are done. Next up, the canard's ribs. And finally the plywood bits.

Tom and I discussed this project at length via email, and I sent him links to your blog on RCG for information on your designs. I'm looking forward to this build too!
