Build Log
1.25m Hoten IX

Hi everyone,

I feel very lucky to be cutting and building one of Uwe Heuer's 1.25m Ho IX designs. I've already got most of the parts cut and the picture shows the trail fit of some of the center section parts.

In the end the whole structure will be sheeted and planked with 1/16" balsa. It will be powered by two Wemotec Microfans and two Don's RC Wicked Motors.

Please note that this will not be a very quick build since I've got several other builds going on concurrently plus some travel plans.

Comments and questions are always welcome.

Cheers,
Brian

Great!
Mine has been on hold / in process' for some time now.
Couple of issues I tripped over.
The planform Uwe used was derived from the Revell Kit info.. I believe (?).
It's a wee bit at variance with the Bentley dwgs.
Wing sweep is a bit off... as are most dims.
Clearly not a relevant issue, given how well Uwes' flies :-)

Basically disliking the annoying Siren sounds of the Microfans.
So have been experimenting with the ADH300 motors (same as Don's)
Tried; Aeo/Gws 55 mm 6 blader , Haoye 51mm 7 blade,. DS 10 blader 50 mm.
The Haoye providing most thrust, hitting 550 gm on 4s.. so far..sans siren whine :-)
10 blade unit has best sounds (small difference) but not quite as much thrust as the Haoye..so far
Albeit this using Topband 2815 3500 kv Hobby King Edf motors.
Bit more weight (10 gms) but mo' power than the ADH 300 motors.. as these are bigger/can handle more.
Rewinding may improve (?) on that... haven't gotten there yet

You had bits lasered. Pricey?

I don't know about the exact planform. At this size all difference will be pretty small anyway...and as you say it's not a relevant issue, given how well it flies.

I've never uses the Microfans but it's my understanding that more blades sound "better" than fewer blades.

Yes, the parts have been lasered. Pricey? Yes, the cost of my laser cutter!

Regards,
Brian

Hi Frank,

One question...don't you guys ever sleep over there. It's got to be either 1 or 2 in the morning.

Very nice build and pictures.

It's interesting that you appear to be running off of one ESC. I've done that with two cd-rom motors before but nothing bigger. How has that worked for you?

Regards,
Brian

I have holidays. I use the time to get finish my BVM P-80 ready assemble. Since there can be times later :-)

Uwe has since installed the same driver set. This has been going, but you have to consider a lot! The start synchronously must take place in both engines. And the engines have always run in the lower speed range.

Cheers,
Frank

Hey Franks,

Are you using the "rudders" inside the exhaust?

Though I do already have fans for this one
The vectors were an interesting idea, and it had to be Uwe that came up with it

Hey Rob,

You already have the fans. Well...

I've been working on a 3d model in Rhino. My plan is to make the kit more like the 2m Ho XII. Meaning more jigs and more interlocking. I want these things to be easy to build!

Cheers,
Brian

Hi Brian,

no, I have not installed any rudder in the exhaust.

P.S Mario Buhler with his homemade Horten IX 2.80m ... what a great sound and jet

Horten 229 zweiter Flug (6 min 2 sec)

Cheers,
Frank

Yes, that's a very nice jet sound.
