Ultimate´s Great Planes F14 Tomcat electric conversion

Hi friends I just open this new thread to sharing my actual project after finished the conversion of the G.P. P51 Mustang. Now is the conversion of the next airplane that I built after the P51. It was the Great Planes also, F14 Tomcat.
It was powered with a OS 61 and used Hobbico retracts as recomended, and built in 1.987, after seeing another G.P. F14 flying into the U.S. Naval Station with a tuned 2 cycle motor by a american buddy. Plane flew very well with that motor and I used during aprox. three years. Most flights were done on a non paved runway that U.S. military and spanish modellers had on a big flat area for service near the harbour of the US Naval Station of Rota; ( goodbye old good days before Sep. eleven ...).
Last glow flight were done on the main paved airport runway during a military airshow with full size jets and models too.... After that I had to leave modelling during some years for out of hobby issues and when arrived again some years ago never flew again... a couple years ago I sold the OS motor, and got a Axi 4120/18 for powering..., now it is the time for start the conversion and by the way, update the retracts and electronics too...

The idea is to use separate mini servos for each aileron. This way I removed the steel control horns inside the fuse compartment and removed also the center standard size aileron servo, cause very probable we will need all room on this area of the fuse for the propulsion battery... 6S 5.000 mah. not sure yet...
We are going to use the HD metal geared 1711mg, only 17.5 grs. the power of a standar size; (3.5) kgs for each aileron and a bargain...
For this reason we must to cut to covering of the bottom on the first two open bays, one for using as servo bay and another cause we must to route the servo wire openning also a round hole that exit into the fuse for plug in...

We used also some of the so called " Armament Set " that Hobbico or Great Planes sold on that time for their jet like models...a retouch of medium ciano and paint was neccesary. As this jet were flown.. on the first Gulf War... some kind of best wishes from the carrier red jackets were painted on the Sparrows to Saddam dictator... Armament pods were fitted to the bottom wing with three Dubro allen head screws and hard points into the surface balsa skins were done with little pieces of yellow inner Sullivan rod that were sanded and ciano on the wing surface and recoved. This way.. screws tap into the plastic instead of balsa for a stronger grip...

Yeap Walter... I think so too... and also more lightweight too..and O.S. 61 FX with muffler is over 680 grs. while Axi 4120/18 with a 80 amp. should be over 390 grs. so..., plus weigh removed of 12 onz. fuel tank, linkages, gas servo and some more stuff... we will need all those saving weigh and using other techs as changing steel pushrods for carbon rods and more to keep all these saving for the propulsion battery... the goal here is that e-set up must weigh less or at least the same that glow versión.. let´s see if we can achieve..
We also removed all the glow stuff accesories from the fuse, old hobbico mechanical retracts, these long steel pushrods retracts, heavy Futaba retract servo, and some others... over 700 grs. of weigh were removed from the fuse..

A good cleaning of the monokote was also provided to removed all dust and some of the old grime on some hard to reach areas of the glow exhaust... after finish all the conversion as last touch we must to do a retouch of the monokote and panneling lines too...

After removing all the glow stuff, retract and gas servos, metal linkage for the mech. retract... leaving only into the fuse the servo for rudders and a couple for elevators and Futaba switch onto a GP. mount, weigh of the fuse es 1.404 grs.
Wing with central aileron servo removed and links is 638, so frame weigh with three servos incluided is 2.042 grs. Our goal is to reach over 3.5 kg. A.U.W. or slighty less...

As preparation of the servo installation on each aileron, we did a round hole into the botto of the wing were it meets with the inner fuselaje to exit the servos cables. We are going to use a mini size on each aileron , extensions cords were added to the servo cables and use dental cord for security of the connections... We checked for the elevator servos and possible faillure or slop but response were good... so maybe we will leave these servos on their office...

Searching on the goodies box we found a couple of brand new Great Planes jet spinners... wow¡¡¡¡.. doesn´t remember that still we have it... we did plastic patterns of the outlines of the ailerons covers that we saw from 1/16 Finland plywood... hard balsa rails were added inside the aileron bay so covers fit flush with the surface of the wing and drill more latter for the holding screws...

We glued the servo mounts with 1/4 wide hardwood and servos were screws using allen head Dubro self taping screws...some rough sanding were done on the inner side of the servos covers and base of the rails for a better glue bond and 30 min. epoxy were used fo glue them... a half moon tunnel were done on one of the rails were cable of the servos exit so wires doesn´t were forced...

Servo covers were fitted to the wing with four philips head and washer wood screws... for the ailerons horns we used the Goldberg plastic short control horns and also did the pushrod with 1/16 diam. steel wire with Great Planes plastics links...

If you say so...., but actually I doesn´t think about... most of the ideas that plan to use on this conversion comes from your awesome build thread S.K....., as the separate ailerons servos and retracts installation and others ones... just oppened this new thread cause I doesn´t want to hijack your one..., but you´re very well welcome here all time my friend...
And said that to friend SK, let´s posting a little bit more...
The idea of the angled positon of the servos inside the covers is that linkage went straigh at 90 degrees from the hinge line, this way I thing that geometry of movements is better than an angled push of the servo arms and suffer less stress on all the system..., ( hinges, servo motor and so...).
A good cleaning of dust of the servo covers and they´re ready to cover with Supermonote Jet White; ( name match too )...

After covering the servos covers and open the hole for the brace arm we also opened the round holes for the screws.. the point of a heated hand solder were used to melt the monokote. Servo were fitted into the covers and arms on their place, doesn´t forget the screws that hold the arm into the servo...¡¡¡
We routed the servo cables via the holes done with the dremel into two ribs and get it out by the circle done into the surface of the wing that exit into the fuselaje. A round grommet were fitted into the hole to keep the cables tiddy..
We sealed also the gap between servo covers and wing for a more streamline and cover the cut into the monokote with a half moon patch....
