Goldwing Slick 540 35CC 76''

Last fall on Black Friday I came across a this plane and it really caught my eye from General Hobby. I decide to go ahead and take advantage of the great sales price. Then I went on a hunt and got a great deal on an EME 35 engine. To keep this trend going I decide rather then going with my typical Savox servos etc I would try a "budget build. This is what I assembled.

Servos: Hobby King TrackStar TS-900 Digital 1/8 Buggy/SCT Steering Servo 66g / 18.6kg / 0.09sec for all surfaces $33.80
Throttle servo: Goteck HC2421T HV Digital MG Metal Cased Car Servo 35g/6.5kg/0.05sec $27.35
Carbon Fiber Landing Hobby King $17.00
Carbon Fiber spinner Hobby King $14.00
HK 20X8 HighPrecision Carbon Fiber Sport Propeller $28
Hk TX Controlled Smoke Pump for Gas Models $26
HK Heavy Duty Alloy 1.5in Servo Arms $6.50
HK Heavy Duty Alloy 3.6in Servo Arms $8

From Pro RC I bought a Pitts muffler, Graupner 12ch Rx, Fortitude gas and smoke tanks and some Graupner telemetry gear.

Attached are pics of the air frame

The first thing I did was hinge all the surfaces with Robart hinges. Then I glued the rudder and horizontal stab in place and mounted the servos. When it came time to install the tail wheel assembly the kit was missing a hollowed out bolt. I found a new bold that fit the lock nut and drilled it out to complete the install. I am planning to run smoke to I applied finishing epoxy to the front the the fuse and the motor box so pretect it from oil.

Tonight I mounted the throttle servo and the EME engine. I had a fellow flier show me a build were he used nylon rod for a manual choke setup. Very simple, cheap and an easy install compared to other methods I have tried.

It is coming together quick. I am waiting on a 12channel receiver but I will have most of it done by the end of the weekend. The longer wait will be for a good day to maiden. We still have lots of snow up here but at least it is starting to melt now.

if it's for flying 3D, here is fine... plenty of threads of 3D planes setting up with gas engines. for 3D'ing, this is the best spot really. if the focus is the engine, then that would be up to you.

put another way, no regulars of the 3D area will typically care if you're posting it to participate in 3Dness of things.

I don't see much information on this airframe so my focus was to do a little build thread on this Slick. I plan to use it to 3D but I will be running an EME35 so it probably should be moved to the fuel/plane/3D section. I have put a request in to a mod.

I replaced the landing gear with carbon fiber gear from Hobby King. I broke a fitting on one of the Fortitude tanks and I did not have much luck repairing it so I just used the tank the came with the airframe. Installed the tanks and a Hobby King smoke pump. I have the pump programmed with a rotating three way switch. Low position is off. High position is always on. Mid position the pump starts when the throttle is out 25% and the flow increases as you increase throttle to 100%. I will do some fine tuning when I get the motor running.

Next I made my own smoke fitting. The pitts muffler already have a 10-32 threaded hole so I bought a brass 10-32 pressure fitting and brass 3/32" tubing. I cut the tube leaving about a 1/4" on either end of the fitting and using pliers I notched one end so two stream of oil would exit the tube. Using a torch I soldered the tube into the fitting. I applied Hondabond HT to the threads and lightly tightened it down in the muffler. I am not sure how well this will smoke as the fitting is usually close to the engine exhaust port.

I decided to take the Slick to the field to start up the new EME 35. I was -10 degree Celcius out and all it took was 7 flips to get it started. With a Pitts muffler we were able hit 7000 RPM. I am going to redo my smoke line and move the nozzle closer to the engine exit port. When I have the CG set and weather warms up a bit it will be ready for maiden
