heli stabilization

What are the options for auto stabilization for a 500 sized heli?

I have seen a few in the past, but more interested to know what is working for the AP comunity.

I use helicommand as well. All of the models should be an option, since your not flying 3d and you didn't mention flybar less. They don't have GPS hold unless you get to profi model, but don't think that's needed if you are just using it to hold the heli while you work the camera.

Is the flymentor junk?

Im not %100 sure this heli will be going top of the line (it IS a HK heli after all)... and i want to get some experience flying FPV on a single rotor.

I had one on my 450. Once I got rid of the vibes it worked pretty good. You really have to know how to fly a single rotor already to get it set up right though.

OK, i started this hobby on a trex 450se and was working on mild 3D when i got bit by fixed wing. If i can get some professional camera gear together i will go for the big 700 setup or multi rotor, but for dabbling now, i think i will have to go the cheap route and get a flymentor or similar to fly my gopro around.

This applies to all stabilization and flybarless systems.

I had a Flybar. It worked ok for stabilizing a hover. I could never get optical stabilization to work however. But the biggest problem I had with it was that it doesn't have accelerometers, only gyros. So if you fly around for a while it looses track of which way is actually *down*. I flew fast forward for a while, came to a stop, released the sticks, and it automatically pitched the nose down. I couldn't figure out what was happening fast enough and crashed.

I'm now working on the ArduCopter system.

Yeah, it's definitely not for those who know how to fly. If you can already do 3d, then just strap your camera on and go. No stabilization hardware will help your video get better, but fpv will

I run flymentors on 2 trex 500s and a FMA Co-Pilot 2 on a stretched SWIFT 16 (620). The flymentors are just great. The FMA when fitted to a 500 is more locked in ! BUT never used it in a built up environment ?
Trex 500 Flymentor & 4 GWS Park HPX Servo 19g/.05sec/3.6kg servos is spot-on The flymentor does NOT like high quality digital tail servos ;-) hey we aint doing 3D here ! Look at the Environment your going to be in ? and choose!
Note; either way buy the field programmer as these are quick and portable
My 500sI use a 200g camera and a 5000mA battery for 10 minute flight times (with some to spare)
Trex 500 has a MASSIVE power to weight ratio ;-) it can "Haul"
70% on the Flymentor is good.
I get were I am going, switch on 65% rates before shooting ? an the 500 turns Coaxial ! ;-0
