Landing Gear Design

There a lots of post about frames but personally I think there is a lot of potential to develop innovative landing gear to cushion some of those bumby landings . Obviously weight is always a consideration and I am not talking retracts here but a simple mechanical device that could adapted for a lot of existing frames.

I think with so many talented builders out there it should be possible to design a landing gear system that can absorb some of the shock of a landing. I have seen a few solutions but a lot of then are so 'hard' they are almost in affective. The idea of this thread is to stimulate some ideas on this subject and share the ideas of members. Hopefully we will see some innovative landing gear that really works and is not overly complicated.

450-500 size heli skids work great and the arms provide flex for hard landings. Simple, cheap, and fit almost any frame since they are easily adjustable length wise.
Shocks and spings are merely gimicks as they don't really offer enough travel or work well at odd angles of impact IMHO.

I've found that pex pipe from your local Home Depot works well. It's light, and flexible, but just rigid enough to hold its shape.

I've been using hint bottles. The bottle cap tends to break after hard landings, which also absorb the impact well. Since I drink them daily, the replacement is actually free

That's a really neat idea I am going to try that. Great suggestion.
