Are you thinking of capping the open bays on the trailing edge of your wings?
After seeing this hint from another "Olyer" I will definitely be doing that on all of my next kits.

You know Mr. G, I was sure thinking about it. I think it was PP or Dave that did it. During the build, I have noticed movement (bow) coming and going with RH change. May help get rid of that some. I don't like the extra weight but I think I'm gonna come in pretty good on AUW anyhow. You and I think alike! Couple pulls on some Hana Bay Rum made me feel just right. I ain't sneezin cause my nose is numb .

Hey Guys,

there is no wing twist in the OLY lll due to the wide D tube sheeting.

and no wing twist in any of my Bird Series or Nostalgia kits that have D tube sheeting.

You can add all the cross bracing, rib capping you want, but your not gaining anything but weight. For some, cap strips are eye candy, I like see them too.

I have to make this post for fear that others that are new or unfamilar with what D tube sheeting does for a wing will think the rib bracing, rib capping is necessary. It is not necessary.

My 2m Lil Bird has wider rib spacing, it will take a vertical dive with no problem. Rib spacing is a factor in wing rigidity.

Ray, wise words as always, a vast majority of flyers will be happy with the stock OlyIII as you describe I would think, especially if they are newish to the hobby.

I'm wondering though about what Gerlad was describing by 'capping the open bays on the trailing edge of your wings'. I first read it as meaning that the gaps between the TE sheets where the end at the ribs was capped, not cap strips on the ribs themselves. I'll try and find a photo of that.

It gets my thumbs up as a sensible mod for less TE flex, shape form holding to prevent sag between ribs and for only a tiny little gain in weight. Not necessary for everyone, but the more advanced builder will recognise the reasons why.

are the little strips between the ribs that fill out the space between the upper and lower TE sheets what you were describing? This pic is a 2 meter skybench Lil Bird but it has the same thing.

My only reason for wanting to add the small strips between the TE sheeting is because of my bear paws. In a panic situation, like the wind catching the wing while I am putting it all together, when I grab for the wing it invariably is on the TE. I have crushed those areas between the ribs a few times.
My Birds can handle the small bit of extra weight in the way I fly. Those who keep each gram off the build have my respect. I'm only thinking of longevity.

Yes, exactly. I was not very clear in my question to Don when I said "the open bays." I had meant the open area between the top and bottom sheeting of the TE.

Only vertical grain? - what a wuss! Mine were 1/32" laminated cross grain to form 1/16" thick thingy's to make old-dudes TE V-box, as he put it.
