1:24 PT boat, late model Elco 77

Starting on another project, a late model Elco 77 in 1:24 scale.

Before the well known Elco 80 footers (the PT-103 class), Elco built a small series of 77 footers with a sexy reverse sheer and aerodynamic cabins. These came along after Elco and the USN had experimented with the Scott Paine 70 foot PT-9, and then Elco's own 70 footers in the PT-10-19 series. It was decided that a longer boat was needed to support the weight of four Mk 18 torpedo tubes, so the 77 was designed.

The first series was 25 boats, PTs 20-44, with what I call the "notch back" cabin. My PT-41 (MacArthur's ride out of the Philippines) was in this series.
The next 23 boats, PTs 45-68, had a swoopier cabin, external deck stiffening beams, and open turrets. A number of these boats went to the UK, a few were used for training at Melville, and the rest served in the Pacific from the earliest campaigns on.

My model will be more compact than the 4 foot 1:20 boats (hey I'm not getting any younger!)... in 1:24, it will be 38.5" long.

Hull will be wood plank on bulkhead, and the swoopy cabin will be a 3D print.

Yes I know one can purchase Wayne's fiberglass parts in this scale, but:

1. Wood PT hulls are dead simple to build, the dual diagonal planking is a cinch.
2. With wood, I can precisely locate prop and rudder tubes and motor mounts off of laser-cut frames, all designed in 3D CAD. With fiberglass you just have a big empty shell and no "datums".
3. Wood hulls can be lighter.
4. And the 3DP cabin will be much more precise and complete than the available 'glass parts.

And while there were only 23 of this class, there are lots of variations to consider modeling:
- PTs 49-58 went to the UK as MTBs, and had a unique equipment fit.
- Of the US boats, some carried four torpedo tubes, some two plus depth charges;
- And some were converted to gun boats, such as PT-59, which was JFK's second command after PT-109.

And for anyone who has doubts about 3D printing for scale models- maybe you haven't seen my other builds using this process?

And you're surely thinking, "Gee Pat, wouldn't it be easy to scale this to 1:35, in order to use Italeri parts for the weapons, and to let me round out my collection of Italeri torpedo boat kits?"

Hey, why didn't I think of THAT before?

The Elco 77' has in my eyes all ways been the epitome of an American built motor torpedo boat, standing out alone from crude base's on the " Canal " to do battle with superior Jap force's steaming down the slot.

That's why someone has to build the model!

First parts loaded on Shapeways, in 1:35...

Should be a interesting build! My vote would be for the 48 boat as she is the only 77' Elco left.

You have to start with a hull. Time to start cutting wood!

Commanded by none other than Robert Montgomery... not much of the boat left to save though.

Pat

Great looking sheet of keel and bulkhead parts. When and where can I place an order?

Patience my friend- it'll take me a couple months or so to trial the fit and fix any bugs... but hey it's only been 72 years since the original launched!
