Default sorting of classifieds

I've seen a lot of posts in the past where people ask how to bump an ad to the top of the list after it's been pushed back 4 or 5 pages. what I see people doing as a "fix" for this is to close their old thread and open a new one. IMO, this is a waste of resources and does little more than clutter the classifieds with multiple threads for the same exact item for sale. And easy fix for this would be to make sure everyone's user settings for the default view of the classified forums is set to "Sort by last post" Below is a screen shot of that setting. What do you guys think about this? IMO, people are going to "bump" their ads any way they can. And, the current method (closing and opening a new thread), is the worst way to do it.

We made it the way it is because there were so many complaints about users bumping their threads. I don't think there is a good way to really solve this as long as we're dealing with forum threads.

We do have a Classifieds revamp on our 2013 roadmap but we're currently working on some other new features (a portals revamp) and after that we plan to work on...something else.

Interesting..you'd think people would prefer to see threads bumped rather than closed and having an identical one opened.

Jim, can you guys discuss my idea once again? The classifieds are getting cluttered with multiple ads for the same items and, even more annoyingly, ads that have nothing more to them than a link to the persons original for sale ad. Bumping of ads is far less annoying than people creating multiple ads for the same product just because their ad is no longer on the first page any longer.

Also, Why don't you just make it a rule that people have to wait 24-36 hours before bumping their ads. Then, if bumping bothers people, they can report the offenders. I'm pretty sure that others here are with me when I say that I'd prefer to be annoyed by an ad that keeps getting bumped, than to have to weed through a bunch of "new" ads just to realize that they are just reposts of ads that are a day or two old. Less clutter is always better...especially on a site of this size.

The feeling here is that it's better that we leave the classifieds alone until we have a chance to revamp it properly. If we get in there and start playing with it we're worried we'll make a lot of people unhappy with the changes.

The idea of making users wait a certain period between bumps is interesting. I'll make sure we cover it in our design meetings.
