The 'I got this for the holidays!' thread

So it's that time of year again- meaning the time of year for us to all get goodies and treats during the winter holidays.

I'm sure that most of us are looking forward to one or two (Or a few) cool new toys to fly around (Or maybe you've already gotten some).

So what have you all gotten for the holidays or what are you hoping to get?

UMX Corsair and UM P40 for me. Summer down here, so as long as the winds aren't blowing, will be a great few weeks off cycling between Champ, T28, P51, P40 and F4U. Spitfire is in the restoration shop awaiting a new fuse.

Kinda the wrong forum but there's a nib MSRX waiting to be wrapped. It's very much winter up here and this will help bridge the gaps between outdoor flying days. And there's always the off chance that there's something I didn't get for myself!

I traded my beat-up Yak for a slightly-dinged Stryker!

My Stryker came last night. Santa was working late, driving his big brown truck.

I bound it to my DX6i, and switched the ail/elev plugs. I also unplugged the rudders from the Y-harness and plugged them into separate ports, in case I want to mess around with airbrakes later. The manual says to reverse the elevator channel in a 6i, but I had to reverse the ailerons to make everything work right.

I got up this morning, ready to go maiden my Stryker, balanced her with a Hyp 240 all the way back, and headed outside. A gust of wind hit me as I opened to door, and the treetops were swaying all over the place. I wanted to fly, so I threw caution to the wind (by deciding to fly in too much wind) and launched the Stryker. She rolled crazily to the left, I barely got my hand back on the Tx in time to roll her back level, and then I cut the power and landed, as she was now heading for the treeline.

I readjusted the trim, then tried again. She rolled right this time, but not quite as hard, and I was able to level her out, and climb to what I thought was safety. The wind was throwing the little Stryker all over the sky, preventing me from doing any trimming, and I almost lost her behind the house. I managed to land again, and adjusted the trim once more. Desiring to further tempt fate, I again launched the Stryker back into the vortex of raging winds. She was being buffeted badly by the wind , and every time I thought I had her trimmed, a gust would flip her over, I would right her again, and then the wind was hitting her from another direction and I would need to retrim! The wind finally blew back my common sense, and I brought the Stryker in by the skin of her prop.

The Stryker does handle wind pretty well, but my flying area is surrounded by tall trees, so the turbulence is horrific. She's my first flying wing, so I'm just glad I got her down in one piece!.

I know that in normal English it's 'bound', it just sounded slightly off when talking about binding a plane to a Tx.

Haven't you ever done that? When you get a new plane, you NEED to fly it!

It's too windy to fly anything right now. How do you like your AS3Xtra? It might be just the thing to fly in our three-car garage.

Of course I know that feeling- stuck at school all day, come home to it gusting 25 and you pop up in the air anyway... It's harrowing but at least you get to fly.

My Extra- I've been flying it outside just fine- it'll handle a few miles of wind wonderfully. I have gotten some indoor, and that's where it really excels.

Hmmm. I'll have to think about the AS3Xtra.

Out of all my planes, the Stryker is the hardest to fly, by a fair margin. I don't know if it's the lack of AS3X (the wind made this MUCH more evident) , or the fact that it's a flying wing, but it is sooo twitchy and unstable!

I've been wondering-how long have you been flying?

I got a UMX Radian. Its pretty small so I bought a pair of Dominator V2's to see it. How they correlate to the Radian I have no idea, but it sounded good. May just have to practice with the UMX and then buy its big brother to strap a camera too. Yeah, that works.
