some testing

Hi!

Yuki from EV-Peak was so kind to send me an AK840 charger, so that I can do some tests and find ideas for improvement.

I like the hardware very much. All metal, no plastic, this is very sturdy. All screws are tight and none is stripped, also very good.
On the inside, The PCB is firmly fastened as well. I especially like the very large heatsink at the bottom, this guarantees a thermally stable operation.

I like the little “rib” at the bottom of the case, it provides a solid stand and prevents hot air from flowing back into the fans. Very nice idea!

The cooling system is very efficient. Even when discharging as fast as possible, the air exiting the charger is not very hot, and nowhere does the charger make a strained impression.

The programming is very easy and self-explanatory. I normally have the habit to read the manuals befor I operate things, but here, it was not really neccessary.
Thumbs up for the display! It's readability is excellent. Many manufacturers have a blue backlight for some strange reason. Blue and black don't have a pretty good contrast. I always suggest white or yellowish backlight.
Here the backlight can be described as white with a blue hue to it, and it's actually very pleasant.

All in all, it was a joy to operate the charger.

But, being the nitpick that I am, I made a huge list of improvement suggestions, which result from my experiences of the past and my wish to have both detailled programming options for special cases, and to possibility to start a charge quickly at the field.

Yuki wrote me, that their engineers are working on this right now, so stay tuned!

I'll attach some images I made so far.

Yuki was generous and provided an AK840 review sample to me to wring out as well Julez. I agree that the hardware seems quite robust and I really like the extruded aluminum case. Firmware is a work in progress and perhaps we can compare notes.

I've provided my 'fix list' and 'wish list' to Yuki.

Cheers,
Mark

Variable speed temp controlled fans? One thing that bugs me about so many chargers is the fans are simply too noisy when they don't need to be. It would be a great feature to have variable speed fans temp controlled fans.

Yes, the fans are thermostatically / load controlled and are very quiet at startup. During charging, they are not noticeably louder than my 306B.

Correct.

But one of my wishes was to switch the fans completely off when there is only a very low load on the charger. I'm sure that for currents <2-3A the electronics don't need active cooling.

That is a JST XH style port. Standard Paraboard will plug into it directly. You will need to change the banana plugs on the Paraboard to XT60.

You do not even need to change it to an 8S JST plug. Just plug the 6S JST plug in all the way to the right.

Look at some of the pictures a few posts back. You will see the battery balance tap plugged directly into the balancer.

Interesting new player in the 1000W market, look forward to more feedback over time from Julez and Mark.

There does not appear to be any on-board data logging. Is there PC-based configuration and/or data logging?

MSRP is $219.95 which includes the 4-1 multi tap balance board, USB cable for PC logging, removable battery clamps, a basic charge cable set and instructions.See pictures from Julez. We are currently out of stock. New shipment is due in next week.

At this time the AK840 does not have PC based configuration. Data logging is done via the PC based software.
