The next set of wings I bag will be done in 1k carbon. I'll wet-sand them to a nice flat hand sanded finish. The elevator and rudder will also be bagged. I think I will use 1k on them as well. They will all be sanded in 45 degree strokes until the weight is where it needs to be. The plug I machined in the picture will be used for these first prototypes. I have to redo a new mold using tooling board. MDF just isnt my thing. But sure is cheaper then 300-500 dollars for a block of tooling board. Anyone know a more affordable place to buy tooling board. Something where I can machine it directly to mold?

Sanding carbon in that fashion will result in parts that are much weaker than you might hope. Carbon filaments are very thin. They are either continuous, or they are not... You might be better off just using a lighter fabric of some sort - particularly on the tails.

Yeah, I may have to do that. The carbon will have to be carefully sanded.. I mean, I count the number of passes.. enough to get rid of the shine from the mylars.. a fine sanded surface keeps flow attached better then a slick surface. There is a suggested grit for that effect.. ill have to look it up..

Tom Siler once mentioned he visited a local countertop making shop for Corian. They had pieces of size that could not be used for other requirements. I imagine larger pieces may require an order at the local Home Depot type place.

Could you wet sand the mylars in the area you want non-glossy? (aft 75% of top surface?)

How did your flying wing DLG project turn out?

I like the tips, look like the old FW planes (will double as launch pegs?). Looking forward to following the build Robert.

Yes the wing tips are completely inspired by the fireworks DLG's. I have used my 3d printer to print up some. Im going to try printing up a few different ones till I get the feel just right and see if I can turn them into plugs to make molds with. If they don't work as plugs Ill machine a mold based on the print I like the best. Id like to make the wing tips, so that they will slip onto the wing after it has been bagged and cleaned up, then epoxied in place. That will also give more strength to the thin wing tips..

I redesigned the pod to use the alegro tail-boom for now because the creation of a custom tail-boom will need some more time and experimentation for me. I plan to create a clean end cap that will streamline the alegro tail-boom where it meets the rudder. The alegro tail-boom will be cut down from its original quite a bit.

Great lines, Robert - I quite like the look of this plane. The HT mount seems like it's quite "tall" though - do you need the HT to be that far away from the boom? Nice CAD work.
