castle 80 esc w/BEC question

ok I just got my first castle speed controller to use with a reaper GR60 on my blue 55SHP..I have always used an airboss and you plug it in and go fly.now I am confused.Do I need a separate battery to go with my castle 80esc.I am was planning to use hitec 225mg's and a thunder power 4s 3850 battery.

I dont want this thing if I have to use a separate bec.an airboss 80 has it built in.can someone explain this to me ..

If you are going to use more then 3s, regardless of how many servos you use you will need to use an external BEC. Some may get lucky and it may run for a small amount of time with the built in BEC at 14.8V, but its just a ticking time bomb. You should definately get something with a switching BEC or get an external one or a Rx battery pack

I guess I didnt understand the electronics of any plane beyond 47 inches.but learn I will if I intend to fly 55 inch planes.just something else to fuss with though the airboss 80 as far as I know doesnt need a switching bec for 4 s operations.

Now really, whats not to like?

Why do so many people fear seperate bec's? Presonally when I am cranking a ton of amps through an esc, the last thing I want to worry about is the internal heat shutting down power to my radio.
This issue is solved by the external bec! They used to solve this with a seperate battery but that was untill someone came up with the b.e.c. (battery elliminator circut).
It's just a better/safer way to fly!
