You will find you need a double sided board.

I am intrigued by you guys making ESC's. For just one, it has to cost 2 or 3 times the cost of just buying one. Getting the parts and pcb, soldering, testing,

learning why they blow up. Brushed ones are easy, brushless are hard.

I've converted this into an 80V/200A design and I'll say their SW is very, very good and very well documented (source and schematic for sensored and sensorless). And you can control it in the other room as it has an ethernet controller built in . Or connect it to your car via CAN interface.

In any case, the kit's available from digikey. Get a scope and their free compiler and you'll be spinning motors in no time, tweaking source, etc.

PS. Most interesting about their source is how well protected it is against faults. If anyone has ever taken a CC controller and connected to a wheel of some kind, you'll see very quickly a $100 controller smoke and burn. And do it again to a second controller later that afternoon.

This design is very rugged. It has current sense on all 3 branches, and enough SW settings that you can really dial in what you want. Over current, under current, max current during acceleration, acceleration rate, dead time, etc. Dozens of parameters to tweak.

Extremely educational. I've augmented their SW and can know with certainty the phase currents, bus voltage and duty cycle via ethernet at 50 mS intervals. Too cool.

One interesting learning that goes back to the massive thread on peak versus average current...A 180A phase current happens while a wattsup meter will be reporting just 28A. I have buckets of cool waveforms.

Interesting, which thread is that? What was the PWM ratio and time on your 180/28 A test?

The peak versus average occurs when you are just starting up an electric bike (220 pounds AUW including rider in this case), for example. In the attached graph, there are the following curves: Green is the max phase currents (all 3 phases recorded) during PWM on. It's a bit noisy, but I've since cleaned up the ADC readings and verified by manually reading across 3 ohm sense resistor. It is indeed around 160A.

But the inline fluke (in this case) is reporting 29A.

However, look at the duty cycle, which is the middle ramp trace. This is duty cycle ranging from about 25% to 40%. The very bottom ramp is RPM. And the blue is bus voltage.

Now, the phase current reported is the MAX during the on time. So it's a bit pessimistic compared to RMS.

But this is another indicator that inline meters at partial throttle are miles away from what is actually happening. In this particular case, I'm learning that a 100A startup current when duty cycle is low can mean 1000A peak inductor current for 10's of uS if you are trying to start quickly.

Looks impressive. Apologies if it is stupid question - but what about governor (mode)?

For little (and bigger) helicopters that's one of the most desirable function.
