slipper clutch melting spur gear

I have a vaterra glamis uno. I got the 3s 5200 mah battery, and the manufacturer says to run the 20T motor pinion instead of the 24T. after replacing the stripped spur gear, I took it out. After 20 minutes the car has trouble moving. I inspected the gear and the slipper clutch melted the surface of the spur gear which it goes on top of. Was it too tight? The motor is a 3300kv dynamite

Sounds to me like it was too loose and with the 3s battery it was probably slipping to the point of heating up.

Do you think the different pinion had something to do with it?

It could have had a little to do with the smaller pinion, but most likely the boost in voltage was the main culprit. My guess is the slipper was a bit to loose even before you started running 3s.

You mean the gear's teeth were sheered off? That's indeed a symptom of a too tight slipper. But earlier it appeared that you were saying the sides of the spur, where it contacts the slipper pads, had started to melt.

Yes the spur gear on it from the factory got stripped after a while on 3s. The replacement one I put on is the one that melted

Stripping of the original could be the result of the slipper being too tight or the gear mesh not being set properly.

The 2nd one melting is almost certainly due to the slipper not being tight enough. How did you have the slipper adjusted? Or was it still at the factory setting?

I've read about this problem. With the 3s the heat from the motor can be transferred to the pinion and actually melt the spur.

Yeah I don't think I adjusted it properly when I changed the spur gear out. Oh well haha

Just get a metal spur get the gear mesh nice and tight and your problems are solved.

But you should check if your motor is really overheating. Even if the slipper was loose, the pad is supposed wear out way before it melts the spur!

I don't think vaterra makes a metal one. And it has to have these little grooves for the clutch pads to go into

A metal spur gear really shouldn't be necessary and only adds to the rotating mass of your drive line. I have plastic Robinson Racing and Kimbrough spur gears in my box that I bought in the late 80's early 90's that have seen hundreds of runs, and are still perfectly usable.

It's all about being patient, taking your time, and getting your gear mesh and slipper adjusted properly before running. As with any high performance machine be it a 1:1 muscle car a snowmobile, dirt bike or RC toy they require proper setup and tuning in order to hold up reliably while being run. Which for me is all part of the fun of the hobby.
