AS3X gyroscope?

Can anyone explain how electronic gyroscopes work on components such as the AS3X RX. It would also be like on the Wii U remote.
Is there actually something spinning or is it done totally electronically?

Thanks!

Mechanical gyros have not been used in quite some time for most implementations. They use accelerometers now which are very sensitive. I have no idea about the Wii device but suspect it's similar.

Likely the gyro is a MEMS unit (google it). Essentially there is a tiny vibrating component in the chip that is used to sense angular velocity.

The chip also likely includes accelerometers and possibly a digital compass (magnetometer) for the full IMU.

So yes there are moving parts, but they are extremely tiny, as the production tech is similar to the photo-lithography used for semiconductor manufacture (easily possible to get feature size below 100nm). The actual sensor element is probably on the order of micrometres in size.

These guys make most of the chips used in model stabilisers AFAIK.

Some interesting stuff on their website.
