Build Log
1/16 scale Sea Imp XII logging tug

Hello Everyone,
I thought I would share this new project with you! Since I finished the building of my Eiger tug boat last spring, I needed a new project. I wanted to build a logging tug from the West Coast. Something like a Ken Mackenzie or a Sea Imp. I started searching for information about plans, mostly the hull plans. I tried to get in contact with the owner of those ships, the architects and the shipyards. No one replied I saw the name of Gary King in a similar post. I decided to contact him. That's when everything really started for this project. I normally build my own hull but buying a fiberglass hull was an acceptable compromise This project is still unfinished. I will post photos as I go along. Hope there is some interest in those little tugboat

Hi Sylvain - you'll enjoy the build. I have both the Ken and the Sea Imp on the go but I work at a very slow pace! Happy to answer questions or send you photos if they will help.

Nice. I have the same Sea Imp hull with a house and other parts started. Good size boat with lots of power options but not overly big. See your putting in a bow thruster. You will find it isn't needed with this style boat as it will spin on it's center line with the twin props in knozzels.

Thanks Mike! Lucky you, you're on the right side of the country!

Thanks keith S. That's exactly what Gary told me! I wanted a bow thruster for side mouvement. Going sideways with my tugs is one of my favourite maneuver

A couple more....

I started building the house out of 2mm styrene. This a first for me since I always used 1/32 plywood for superstructure building. Seing everyone using styrene I decided to give it a try! I'll never go back to plywood for superstructure build Some more progress.

Thanks. You inspired me also with your 1/12 log tug build! By the way, what is final weight of your log tug?

About 45# I'm guessing. It was just sold to a Maritime Modelers club member.
