Law enforcement considers helicopter (and any RC aircraft) a "Drone"

My flying buddy has a bumper sticker that says, "Slope Soaring is Not A Crime" and I'm sure that more than a few of us have been occasionally warned by Johnny Law but did you know our toys are now classified by the FAA as UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) or drones?

Go figure!

A Northern California pilot apparently found this out the hard way. Read, "Feds cite Marin County men over drone helicopter flight at Alcatraz" at http://www.marinij.com/sausalito/ci_...one-helicopter

So that we don't end up seeing a caravan of black vans descending upon our favorite slopes to shut us all down, let's all use a bit of discretion in how and where we fly.

I don't think any of us want to be considered drone pilots.

We are allowed to operate for "fun".
He has a company that is there for profit.
The government wants a piece if that pie.
We should use discretion. ( which he didn't )
But we also are in the "fun" part...

I'm not so sure? Sloping has always been a crime around here! I think that there are more people now doing it who don't think like criminals

This guy certainly brought all this on himself. Very poor judgement on his part. Alcatraz is Federal property and a National Park. He was spooking birds in a National Park? What a knucklehead. Unfortunately, idiots like this give us all a black eye and make it easier for the over regulation crowd to damage our hobby.

If his heli is subject to Federal Aviation Regulations, he's in violation of minimum altitude flight over a congested area: 1000' above the highest obstacle within 2000' lateral radius.

That may be true for airplanes but Helicopters have different rules.

TRUE. Especially when you consider that our War Dept "Drones" have killed hundreds of civilian non-participants in Afghanistan & elsewhere. They chalk it up as "collateral damage".
