Epoxy For Mold Fabrication

Looking for ideas on a good epoxy to use for making some new molds for my Q40 model, I have been using West System for making my glass molds but would like something perhaps equal but a bit cheaper/ if nothing I will stick with west system.

I've heard Resin Research is good.
I have some MiaPoxy 100, but haven't tried it yet. Tech sheet looks decent, though.

Have you read this thread:

Very comprehensive and pretty rigorous testing of various systems.

Hi Dave
I have used many tooling epoxy's, and the best that I have found is from Resin Services. It is strong and has very little chipping, have made over 200 fuses and tails in the same mold.
Picture has product, R-200 fuse and mold in back ready to paint.

Thanks Randy, I was refering to epoxy to use with the glass to make the mold itself, I like BJB enterprises tc1611 for tool coat, I am sure both are pretty much the same though...

I use USC 635 with the medium hardener (3:1) for bulking the molds. http://www.uscomposites.com/epoxy.html Almost as tough as MGS 285 at a fraction of the cost!

I am planning to go with a polyester tooling gel coat http://www.fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.a...oldItem=126149 and a Vinylester resin system http://www.fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.a...oldItem=135441 to see if I can have a polish-able finish for paint in the mold quality on my next set. No idea if it will work yet!

Hey Scott, Yes, I think I am going USC 635/medium for the build up. I looked through Adams thread and towards the end he said that is what he used and he is way more of a perfectionist than I am...

I am afraid to make big changes to what I know works, you put a lot of time into a plug and mold to change at my old age, I love the BJB surface coat, I wax and pva my plugs and after mold is done give the surface coat a light sand ending in 2000 grit then polish with a little buffer and compound just like a mirror... Hard as nails and about 90 dollars a gallon so not to bad there...

thanks
