Build Log
OK Models / Pilot Piper J-3 Cub

Starting back on building and wanted something that is actually have the guts to build and fly. Most of the other kits are on display at the LHS. This particular manufacturer is my favorite given the design. Would like to see if there are other kits out there with such precision laser cut parts. I think I've seen a few but haven't had the opportunity to experience building them. And I'm one of those kit hoarders that won't touch the older kits.

Got the fuselage started and tried to figure how best to 'jig' the structures give it is laser cut and already fits well. Just a matter of where to apply pressure while the PVA glue dried. Decided on PVA instead of CA.

Sheeting for the top and bottom. This reall comes together quite simple as you decipher the plan in Japanese and English. My experience with these kits are that, the wing is its so tight a fit , you can lift it without glue.

Anyone know of scale Piper wheels (hubs) that's between 45 - 50mm? The kit calls for vacuum formed wheels which is great for weight and looks. I just prefer foam.

Got on with the leading edge ribs and LE itself with epoxy. Made a mistake not looking at the spar alignment. One side is a little warped....

Can I get some input on covering materials? What's light but not too transparent for a kit this size? It's about 1m in wing span. I don't want to use monokote. Reading another thread, econokote sounds like the way to go.

I initially thought of tissue. There's polyspan? Silk sounds like overkill. And don't knoew enough about Oracover, Coverite, etc. and not about to waste time with doculam although I have some on order because there's painting required.

Some advice would be appreciated.

I never had any laser cut parts in my Pilot models, and this is only one of the many that I did build.

Can't figure out how to delete the extra picture.

I prefer Ultracote Parklite. It is a bit heavier than Solite, but is more translucent and doesn't require constant re-shrinking the way Solite does. It is a little thicker and stronger/more puncture resistant and it comes in a lot more color choices than Solite.
