Ran the 3A edition of this device tonight for 1 minute at 3A, no assisted cooling other than normal dissipation to air (eg, no fan), it didn't shutdown at that point but it was getting quite hot indeed. The Linear regulators are tough units.
Realistically I'd not suggest more than 10~20 seconds at full current and certainly no more than 1~1.5A continuous (which raises the temperature by about 20'C above ambient, using my finger-feel, ~52'C is when it burns, air was 33'C here today, I was able to keep my finger on it.
As a completely odd addition, I can obtain tiny fans which would be able to sit on the heatsink, drawing about 70mA to cool things down. Too bad they're so expensive.
