Sig Somethin' Xtra Arf....electric or glow?

I am having a bit of a dillema deciding on what power set up to use on this ARF. I have an AXI 4120/18 motor and CC 100 esc. I also have a new Irvine .53 that is collecting dust. I would need to buy say 3 6S battery packs ($140).

The downside to glow is a messy plane and carting around the flight box, the upside is longer flight times.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I built mine last November and used a Tacon 46, 65a eRC speed control, 14x8 APC prop and a 5s 5000mah battery. I love it!!

I just put a 1400W, 350kV Turnigy motor on the front of mine... going to be running 3x3S 2200 mAh packs in series. Should be about 12 lbs of thrust on a 13" propeller at full throtle. Cost in batteries is ~$60 from hobbypartz... should run 10 mins at half throttle.

Self preference really. Do you want to clean up your airplane and deal with glow? Most decided no a long time ago.

Keep it cheap and simple - Electric

I had to decide glow or electric on a P40 warbird during the summer. Chose to use a Turnigy G60 with a 5S 5000mah lipo and 100A ESC. I bought some Zippy compact lipos and a 4000mah Turnigy at around $40 each. Now I have a Escapade 61, 64" Decathlon, and 64" Extra 330S all using the same batteries. For those I got the Turnigy SK3 430kv motor and YEP 100A ESC for less than $100. Compared to a new 80 size nitro, that's pretty good.

I also spent an extra $40 on a new 200W Turnigy charger that lets me charge these 5-6S lipos in around 30 mins at the field.

You can make it perform similarly with either fuel or electric. If you have a general preference or are already set up for one or the other then you'll probably be happiest going with whichever choice that is. I'd love to have a few fuel planes but lacking a good place to fly one, I stick exclusively to electric.

I really like this plane.
A friend has an older one, running an O.S. 46 (performs real good)
If i get one, i will go electric.
I have sold most of my nitro planes (don't want the mess or the extra hassle anymore)
Maybe it's just an old age thing, who knows.
The one thing that is a big advantage going with nitro, is getting longer run times.
That's just not a big enough advantage for me.

I appreciate the comments, thank you all. I have decided to go with glow seeing as I have a newer engine not doing anything and would have to spend a few dollars to buy 3 lipo's.

3 lipos why? One good one will charge fast and get you back in the air. You don't need megawatts either....

I was thinking to have three to take to the field so I could get some flight time in. For the motor/esc I have it would take 6S 3000 mAh

Personally, i hate waiting for a battery to charge at the field (just me)
I always have at least 3 batteries for any electric plane i fly (usually 4)

Yeah, but....newer packs can really be charged fast.... so.....

I always take more than one model to fly, so by the time I get another flight in on something else, and get back down, the battery is charged for the other model.

Fast charge capable. These seem to put out great power too.
