Closing the bottom of the wing is not necessary. Look at the many planes in the scratchbuilt forum having wings similar to that. Like the Blue Baby http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...light=blu+babi
What you can do to stiffen the wings up is use the newspaper glue covering. See http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...t=glue+newspap Cover both sides at the same time and use wood dowels on the wing edges for additional strength.
