Are you a member of AMA?

The FAA is responsible for controlling the airspace in the US. AMA works with the FAA and informs members of certain restrictions. Without receiving some of this information there is a possibility you could run afoul of the FAA.

With the abundant array of inexpensive RC planes and Multi-rotor aircraft available I wonder if there are growing numbers of flyers, especially beginners, who are unaware of protocols that should be observed when flying your aircraft.

I would say most beginners don't even know what the AMA is; if they only fly park flyers, the AMA would seem irrelevant to them.

That was my position several years ago, and the only reason I joined the AMA was that it was required to participate a float fly event that I really wanted to attend. I started reading the magazine and attending more events.

Several years later, I'm a full member and have enrolled my six year old grandson as well.

The AMA has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old. I've always felt I've owed a lot of what I am today to model aviation. A 20 year USAF career, and another 20years as a RC designer/kit maker/business owner. Now retired and enjoying the hobby. I've met some outstanding people in the AMA and am proud to call most of the AMA staff friends. They are a dedicated group of people, most of them volunteers, doing their best to keep our hobby viable.

Just to point out to any UK readers, the UK equivalent to the AMA, (Academy of Model Aeronautics - USA), is the BMFA, (British Model Flying Association ).

No, Canada has it's own organization the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada The AMA and the MAAC have reciprocal agreements, so if you're a member of one you can participate in events of the other.
